About this listen

2016 Ink and Insights Competition – Judges’ Favorite

2017 Readers' Favorite Award for Epic Fantasy

Second in the 2017 SPFBO

#1 Amazon Best Seller in Epic Fantasy

Long ago, the world fell into twilight, when the great empires of old consumed each other in sorcerous cataclysms. In the south, the Star Towers fell, swallowed by the sea, while the black glaciers descended upon the northern holdfasts, entombing the cities of Min-Ceruth in ice and sorcery. Then from the ancient empire of Menekar, the paladins of Ama came, putting every surviving sorcerer to the sword and cleansing their taint from the land for the radiant glory of their lord.

The pulse of magic slowed, fading like the heartbeat of a dying man.

But after a thousand years, it has begun to quicken again.

In a small fishing village, a boy with strange powers comes of age....

A young queen rises in the west, fanning the long-smoldering embers of magic into a blaze once more....

Something of great importance is stolen – or freed – from the mysterious Empire of Swords and Flowers....

And the immortals who survived the ancient cataclysms bestir themselves, casting about for why the world is suddenly changing....

The complete, award-winning epic series in one volume.

What a good deal!

I got this with some misgivings because, well, 50 hours. It seemed like a huge commitment and I find that these epics so often lose their momentum and become less interesting once the world building phase ends.
Somehow Huston largely avoids that fate. Perhaps it's because, while we have the inevitable youth who unexpectedly finds himself thrust into the role of hero, we also have a number of more interesting characters whose stories feel equally important.
I'm grateful I took the chance because this is one of the better epic fantasies that I've read and cost per minute is amazing. Ha ha.
I don't usually give books 5 stars and it's not that this book is perfect. It's more a 5 star rating for exceeding my expectations by a long shot. I heartily recommend it if you're in the mood for an epic fantasy quest or if you've been wondering if you should give this genre a chance.

wtf was the point

I couldn't finish. Just seemed pointless. If there is like 7 more books coming I could see it going somewhere but I didn't really like what I've heard so far.

An excellent epic, well worth the time and money

Loved this book, comfortably familiar tropes but with fresh takes and consistent characters

listen at 1.2x speed if you’re having trouble staying engaged.

My Big problem w this audible book is the narrator

The narrator has a wonderful voice for normal reading, but the character voices are a problem. No 15 year old boy sounds like that. They all sound like little kids and I mean 7 year olds. That made the book a tad complicated to follow at times. Past that I enjoyed the book. Sorry Guy Williams, but a 15 year old boy doesn't sound like a 7 year old boy

It was ok.

The story had good elements. Character defeats were handed out as plot points though; unattached to the defined world lore, training, skill, or experience. The book actually talks about training and sword styles and schools of magic and the old ways and such though- it just doesn't seem to take any of this into account when pitting characters against each other. So it is an enjoyable story if you overlook the fights. Good world concept I should say though.

Despite some of the other comments I think its a good book with a good story and the narrator did a good job.

Slow and Underwhelming

Story is very slow, sometimes feels disjointed like he wasn't sure where he was taking the characters.

The narration is amazing, the only reason I actually finished the series.

Narration issues

The book is good but a bit slow paced. This is made worse by the slow cadence used by the narrator. He also tends to exaggerate the accents to the point that some of them are comical.
