About this listen

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Cultural Revolution, then pay attention...

The Cultural Revolution, known in full as the “Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution”, was launched by Mao Zedong, the chairman of the Communist Party of China, as a means of quashing capitalism in China. He wanted to ensure that the desire for a communist government would remain strong in the country long after his death. Like other previous leaders who attempted to continue to rule after their death, his attempt did not work out quite the way he had planned.

Over the course of a decade, from the summer of 1966 to 1976, Mao Zedong implemented a number of changes that have led him to be known as one of the most brutal tyrants of the modern age.

In The Cultural Revolution: A Captivating Guide to a Decade-Long Upheaval in China Unleashed by Mao Zedong to Preserve Chinese Communism, you will discover topics such as:

Well Worth

A worthy final installment on the people's trilogy. I found it quite refreshing that the book put a lot of focus on the impact of the Cultural Revolution on the general population and how they tried to get on with their lives while all this was going on. As in the other two books, the all-pervasive violence and how it tears families, friends, and the social fabric apart is just beyond words.

Enlightening book

Wow, what an enlightening book on China! The author’s balanced use of individual stories and hard statistics make this book a must-read. It took me a bit to get into it, but once I started I could not stop. I highly recommend this book to anyone seriously interested in China.

Very interesting

Very interesting and very important book. Many parallels between China's Cultural Revolution and what is starting to be seen and currently experienced in the USA today. Very easy read and informative at the same time. Highly recommended.

Well researched as always. This is an insightful analysis of the ebb and flow of politics and positions during this important time in China's history.

Very informative

A very informative and well-written book on a piece of history not really discussed deeply in many historical chronicles. This piece is extensive with good research behind it.

An In-Depth Book

The author covers the era in-depth, with all of the death, denunciations, and economic calamity that happened in this period (along with some of the ingenuity and entrepreneurship of the times, as well). I found the entry on the Great Leap Forward to be a more fascinating read, but this book is still eye-opening.

How much I did not know about the Chinese cultural revolution. An awful time in China.

Absolute power corrupts. I drew parallels to the young of today being indoctrinated the same way the Chinese revolution did. Coach the young, plant seeds of discontent and unleashed without laws. Sanctioned murder and mayhem. I wanted to know more this horrific period of history after it’s briefly illustrated in the 3 body problem series. Anyone who thinks differently is persecuted, suffering beatings and public shaming. 1000s committed suicide, or were jailed and beaten. This book is an excellent primer to this subject.

Five Stars

Another fine work by this author that wraps up the beginning of the current Chinese regime through two previous books. The Cultural revolution mainly started through an attempt by Mao to regain power and influence after the Secret speech by Khrushchev until his death.

Definitely worth Listening

Definitely worth listening. This book is extremely well researched and have some very eye-opening information about the period when China was closed off to the rest of the world. It is a laborious read, but worth while.
