Prologue

By the time Heidi came running down the stairs, she had her entire family’s attention, but she ignored them as she ran directly toward me. She slowed down at the last second, slipping behind my back and grabbing my arm, as if she was trying to use me as a physical shield.

Needless to say, everyone was looking at her in alarm now.

Her face was bright red, her pulse visible in her neck, as she spoke up the moment that the guy following her made it halfway down the stairs.

“I have an announcement to make,” she said loudly, not looking at anyone directly. “Sam isn’t just Lexi’s coworker. He’s also my boyfriend.”

Absolute silence.

Painfully awkward silence.

Oh,” her mother finally said loudly, a mixture of confusion and dread in her expression. “Heidi, sweetie, if he’s your boyfriend, then why didn’t you tell us?”

“Because,” Lexi announced, beginning to walk over, her expression determined. She waited until she was hooking my other arm before continuing. “He’s also my boyfriend,” she said bluntly.

Great story, love the plot twist and the slow harem build.
Plus the realistic stress moments.

Great series but don't know if I can finish now.

The author has done a fantastic job but really killed the story in chapter 10. I just don't know what he was thinking. He made it seem like the latest woman was waiting on Sam all he like to making her a cum dumpster. Don't you think Sam deserves better than that? Did you have to go that route? Pretty dumb if you ask me.

a great new chapter

I loved this book, as I loved this series.

I do however, have a beef with at least one other review here, in regards to the character of Winter.

One of her plot points was that she was deeply ashamed of her past-- without context, what she was ashamed of can come across as quite shallow, but in context, it tells you a lot about her character, and the heart of it isnt really what the other review would have you believe. there will be minor spoilers from here on.

as they have already mentioned it, part if the issue was that the character had premarital sex. the problem is not as much the sex, as the reasons she was having it. and the way she used it. addictive behaviors and knowingly placing yourself in bad situations are always unhealthy.

the context of why she was doing it is more important than the what. and while you might not agree with her that it is something to be ashamed of, the fact she believes it is believable and rounds out her character.

Best of the series...so far...

I absolutely love this series. Before I even say a word about the author or story though; proper respect to Christopher and Jessica. Thought they did a superior job with the roles and voices. Most especially the way they interacted with one another. They surely recorded together for the interactive parts, because I thought they were seamless. It speaks well of narrators when you don't need the authors descriptive text to tell you who is speaking anymore.

And while great narrators can elevate anything they put their talents to, they can't make bad stories awesome. Contrary-wise, terrible ones can make a superb story unbearable. Thankfully, in this case the story was a good one to start with, and their considerable talents just made it that much better.

I don't understand all the hubub, in some of the reviews, about the primary plot not progressing in this book. While I can agree that we didn't get much (read: any) in the way of closure on the main plot, I personally thought that there were several new bits and twists added to it. If this ends up being the last book in the series...okay...I'll gripe. But as a "middle book", I thought it was plotted and paced very well.

MINOR SPOILERS (and a very little bit of ranting) AHEAD:
The other thing that the reviews brought up more than once was the "slut-shaming" thing...and how terrible that was. At this point in my life I'm convinced that people just can't be happy if they aren't grumping about something. I've listened to this book twice now, and Winter is my favorite of Sam's wives / girlfriends. I never got the impression (not even once) that the author was beating up his own character about prior sexual experience (regardless of the amount of said experience). To the contrary, the way that Kurtis presented the character made me think she was not in the least bit ashamed of "having had sex", but was devestated that she wanted to Sam to be her one and only...and then her nature happened to her. The horrifying part was the dark place that she went to when she failed her own expectations of faithfulness. It almost made me think of a drug addict's downward spiral. I think Kurtis has a great character in Winter, and I hope to keep seeing (hearing) her get lots of page time.

If there's any complaint I have about the book...and this is truly minor...it's that Sam has enough women in his life now that giving all of them (most especially his original two) some good exposure has become almost forced. For the most part that's been fine with me. Personally, I find his later pairings to be more interesting than the earlier ones...and again...Winter is an incredibly solid (and personal favorite) addition to the mix.

So, okay. This series is not War and Peace folks. I mean, Kurtis is good...but let's have some realistic expectations here. There's a slow burn (and thus far interesting) overarching story, a lot of hooking up, and some fun "the family you choose" interactivity. If you don't like your described sex in man on woman (and a little woman on woman in the wings) form, pick a different series to invest your time in. But to label the author as misogynistic...when Sam literally accepts all of his women (rough patches and all) as they are...seems a bit irrational.

This has been a fun series, and easy series to get into. Hope Kurtis keeps up the great work. Would love to see a couple of these books drop yearly. Enjoy!

Great Series

I really do enjoy this series, I’m always checking if the next installment is out yet. The narration is fantastically done and the story is original in the subtle details that make the book so enthralling. My only complaint is that the author REALLY needs to come up with a new phrase to reference orgasms. Hearing “get there” in every single scenario that involves sex or sexual dialogue, often multiple times, is annoying. Other than that little rant, I love these books.

The entire series is great and I've loved this book so far. I've read the series on book form both the first and the second and they are great as always.
