About this listen

A lethal orbital defense platform. A squad of green Marines. A silent alien killer. Who dies next?

2441 AD. A quarantine platform in the Rakasa system goes quiet and a squad of freshly minted Marines are sent to investigate. The blood soon flows, but there is one Marine who has the bravery and cunning to take on even the most lethal hidden foe.

I have listened to about two books into this series so far and while their isn't really any depth to the story or character development its still an interesting listen. If all your looking for is military jargon and tactical situations this is your book.

It wasn't bad

This is a well told story but probably should not be listed to before book one. As needed background information is lacking. It would be better if the story was more stand alone

Good but...

Someone please explain too Mr. Kafer how pronounce “Sabot” . It is pronounced Say- Bow. Not sa-bot. If you are going to write a military themed novel then the person who is too narrate it should at least have the very basic military verbiage vocabulary.

Needs a new narrator.

This was a well-written prequel to all the other books of The Sleeping Legion series. It puts a number of things in perspective in such a way that gives a sweet realization - especially about Lance and his Obsidian sword, Zena, and Captain Grimgerde. Definitely a good read.

A Fitting Prequel

The narrator took a little getting used to as his tone was… strange (and the way he said “womb” made me gag) but otherwise this was an entertaining enough listen.

Entertaining

Good stand alone story, but when read incongunction with the other books in the series the backstories do not match up.

the hero of the story is basically a moron who is liked and as such gets promoted. he ultimately saves the day by not running away and doing his job. the great discovery he is credited for which saves his life is not even his but was given to him from his intelligent computer.

if you can listen for free go ahead but don't pay for any of the series. not worth the money.

Author can not remember his books backstory

This is the prequel to a series I am sure they would like the listener to buy. Sadly it cage me no reason to follow up on. It focuses on a battle without being clear why they are fighting. It kills off characters right and left without developing any to the point that you care. The only motivation is to fight and you fight because if you don’t the “overlords” kill you. The series with enough time to develop characters, a back story, and motivations may be better but I don’t intend to find out.

To short, too chaotic

I really liked this story. The Author did a superb job of immersing me in a hardened military world without losing me in acronyms and details. It was obvious the writer has put time in with the military, and on deployment.

The combat was written with the entire scope of human emotion, tragedy, and triumph. In the end, the main character is believable. Especially with anyone who was ever junior enlisted suddenly responsible for people and things way above their rank.

The world building is rich, without delving to far into detail. The story focus was clear, and I was thoroughly engaged. The world/universe created is not overcomplex, right in the Goldilocks Zone. The price for this short story is nothing, but the time investment was worth it. I was completely entertained. Getting the series, which is grossly underpriced. I would have paid for this.

The narrator is perfect for this story.
Highly recommend, 5 out of 5 in all three categories.

This was a nice surprise, with bonus explosions.

A believable military sci-fi with accurately portrayed new recruit social behavior. Will read more from this author.

Animal and gritty, good attention to detail.

The chapters were very short, some only 2 minutes long which broke up the story and lost it's cohesiveness. Every character that was developed died. I found that disconcerting. One strange part of the story was when the perspective switched from hero to bogey. Very strange and took me some time to understand the switch. A lot of fracking language in this too! It kept me intrigued, but I've heard better. I did like the narrator. He reminded me of the guy on Twilight Zone.... :-)
