Biology Professor Kevin Ballard finds his quiet life rocked by a series of vicious mysterious events. First, his mother is slain in his childhood home. Then, his girlfriend (and research assistant) is kidnapped from their cabin, and he finds that the plant he's studying is apparently being used in strange local rituals. To top it all off, the police think Kevin is somehow involved.
Who wants to wreck his life and why?

The narrator does an excellent job in his narration. The voices used are easy to tell which characters are talking.
I was provided a free review copy of this story. this is my honest opinion left voluntarily.

Kevin is a successful biology professor. Problem is, his parents, who were strictly religious, frowned on his chosen profession. Kevin doesn't let it affect him much, until news comes of his mother's brutal slaying. When Kevin goes back home, his girlfriend is kidnapped, and he fears the people who slayed his mother are responsible. When he finds his mother's journal, things start to come together, and he doesn't like the story that it all tells.
Although this was a rather short listen, it was an interesting take on horror that took religion and obsession to new and terrifying depths. I really wasn't sure what to expect with this story, but I love the psychological aspects behind the not knowing. The characters in this story were well-fleshed out and felt real. Especially the people in the church. The whole icy tone of the town really added to the worldbuilding and the suspense.
Narration was a perfect match to the story.

I liked this book for the most part. I felt as though the ending could have been a bit better. It felt like the author might have just gotten "tired" at the last chapter or two.
Overall, the characters were well built and the plotline was written very well.
The narrator is one of my favorites so I can't do anything but sing his praises. He has amazing control and is very good at differentiating characters. I never have an issue figuring out which characters are which as he has different inflections and tones for each character. His female voices sound like females but not like he is "trying too hard"
Overall, a good book and a great listen
Pretty good

Sean Duregger could read from a phone book and it would be great. As always, he does everything he can to create something of artistic value.
The book itself is a disappointment. I recently listened to Coomer’s Shining the Light which was amazing so I expected another treat with this book.
Sadly it is not.
It becomes pretty clear that the author had no concept and simply wrote what came to his mind.
The story is confusing, jumps randomly between characters and has no logic.
To give an example: the killer is first introduced as a hillbilly, then suddenly he’s a cult leader then suddenly a biblical scholar - and that after the police introduced him as a meth head living in a trailer.
But that’s not all. He also can teleport.
While the MC drives to visit his mom (a three hour drive) the killer first breaks into his house and abducts his girlfriend, then brings her in his trailer, then travels with light speed and arrives at the hero’s hometown hours before him. Where he murders a random gas station clerk for no reason. Then he visits the MC’s mom and murders her, too.
Besides that the author uses all available stereotypes when it comes to religious people.
The narrator saves the book

There was no real character development so you get what you get, I liked them, but they stayed fairly static. The plot was a bit here and there and while the overall story was solid, I didn't think the execution was there. Maybe I missed something and the prolonged ending made it something more than it was, I did understand it, yet still felt it was so so. I wanted more from the author and I know he has it.
Sean Duregger did a great job with the narration. He really pulled out all the stops with his character voices. The accents were awesome and he really put emotion into the story to keep you wanting to listen.
