About this listen

A gripping psychological thriller from the bestselling author of Follow You Home and The Magpies.

It was the job she had dreamed of since childhood. But on her very first day, when an unnerving encounter drags up memories Sophie Greenwood would rather forget, she wonders if she has made a mistake. A fatal mistake.

What is her ambitious young assistant really up to? And what exactly happened to Sophie's predecessor? When her husband and daughter are pulled into the nightmare, Sophie is forced to confront the darkest secrets she has carried for years.

As her life begins to fall apart at work and at home, Sophie must race to uncover the truth about her new job...before it kills her.

Stupid protagonist.

The writing is excellent. I generally enjoy this author. However, the main character in this book makes so many stupid decisions for no apparent reason, I found myself wishing it would end as a tragedy with the heroine in a grave. Also, this is one of those books where you figure out the “twist” in the first 50 pages but think, “That’s too obvious. It must be a red herring.” But then your obvious guess turns out to be the twist and you are left totally disappointed.

Quick, thrilling read!

Enjoyed it and will be looking for more by this author. I’m a huge psychological thriller and suspense fan and appreciate when it’s done right and all loose ends are tied up. You definitely will not want to be interrupted from the middle of section 2 through to the epilogue!!
Thank you Mr. Edwards for another treat!
Thank you also to the voice actress. There were many female characters and she did a great job truly differentiating them.

Please note, I alternated this book on Kindle while taking breaks from working online through this pandemic and a similar review will appear there.

Grand story

Did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. At one point I almost retuned this book because I hate people who make stupid choices. But as the story went on Sophie's character developed more and I found I did not want to put the book down. The end is a bit predictable with a twist. Worth reading

Recommended. 5 Stars!!

Interesting story. Although this book was not my usual read, I got pulled in early and ended up really liking it. Family and old friends and secrets with lots of psychological twists and turns. Other than the main character being overly dramatic on occasion, I really liked this.

dive in, you won't regret it.

very well thought out story line that flowed amazingly well. wasn't thrilled with the narrators accent but I got used to it pretty quickly since I was so engaged in the book.

I liked it but...

I'll preface this by saying that I really enjoy thriller/ghost/paranormal anything and am rather easily entertained so the story was actually quite good, however the part I can't get over is the author's incredibly annoying female characters. This is particularly disappointing as the main character is a female. They (referring to this and the other book I've read from him- Follow You Home) make unrealistic decisions and come off as paranoid shrews/crazy ladies. I get some women are like that, but the women in these books just aren't believable and make me really dislike the main characters. I let it go with Follow You Home because the main female character in that book is actually not a good person at all, but in this case it just ruined the whole story for me. Some of the plot twists I definitely didn't see coming, but I probably won't read or listen to anymore of Mr. Edwards works based off of his poorly written characters. I'm pretty bummed about it because the plots in both of these books are very well done- I just can't abide the narrative.
