About this listen
Four-year-old Malone Moulin is haunted by nightmares of being handed over to a complete stranger and begins claiming his mother is not his real mother. His teachers at school say that it is all in his imagination as his mother has a birth certificate, photos of him as a child, and even the pediatrician confirms Malone is her son. The school psychologist, Vasily, believes otherwise as the child vividly describes an exchange between two women.
Convinced that Malone is telling the truth, Vasile approaches Police Commander Marianne Augresse with the case, who has been searching for a gang of thieves that robbed a luxury store and left a couple dead in the neighboring town of Deauville to no avail.
Marianne and her team soon discern that Malone's memory is in the hands of those around him; the cold members of the Moulin family and the people with whom they associate themselves. With Malone's recollection of the past quickly fading to give way to pirates, animals, and other more innocent thoughts children have at his age, Marianne is desperate to find a through line.
Well-crafted and showcasing the fragility of a child's cognition, The Double Mother is a riveting investigation to follow.

Story
Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

Story
Giverny, France. During the day, the town is the home of the famous artist Claude Monet and the gardens where he painted his Water Lilies. But once the tourists have gone, there is a darker side to the peaceful French village. This is the story of 13 days that begin with one murder and end with another. Jãme Morval, a man whose passion for art was matched only by his passion for women, has been found dead in the stream that runs through the gardens. In his pocket is a postcard of Monet's Water Lilies with the words: Eleven years old. Happy Birthday.

Ten-year-old Annie Warren hasn't made it home from school and with every passing hour, hopes of finding her alive are fading fast. Her parents, Cathy and Kit, are frantic with worry, fearing the worst. Could their daughter, the miracle child who came as a surprise to them both, have been abducted? The police are coordinating a massive search but seem totally clueless, while the Warrens' home is under siege from a news-hungry press pack crawling over themselves to cover the story.

Engaging
The plot is captivating but missing the depth of Bussi’s other work I’ve read. The performance is okay. Overall, I’ve found the book entertaining if not a masterpiece.
