On a rainy night in April, a chance encounter on a lonely road draws David into a romance with Jana Fletcher, a beautiful young law student. Jana is an enigma: Living in a run-down apartment and sporting a bruise on her cheek that she refuses to explain. David would like to know her secrets, but he lets them lie-until it's too late. When Jana is brutally murdered, the police consider David a prime suspect. But as he sets out to uncover the truth about Jana, he begins to realize he's treading a very dangerous path-and that her killer is watching every move he makes.

Critic reviews

"Dolan's seemingly effortless prose sets off dialogue that surprises and delights, and his intricate plot is simply dazzling: a twisting, shifting labyrinth of events, characters, and motivations . . . every bit as good---if not better---than the first." ( Booklist)

Creepy!

What a story! Couldn't stop listening. A twisted tale, very well told. I thought that narrator Michael Kramer was the perfect voice to narrate it.

It just keeps getting more intriguing.

Where does The Last Dead Girl rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I like a book that keeps going deeper and deeper, giving the reader things to think about and be aware of. This one did it for me. A good story, a superior narrator and an always changing plot. Good characters, well developed.

What did you like best about this story?

The plot twists. I kept being sure I had things figured out until I realized I didn't.

What does Michael Kramer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Michael Kramer is among the best of the best narrators. Just the fact that he narrated the book made it a must read for me.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Nothing extreme. A little nervous for the characters from time to time.

Any additional comments?

I listen to a LOT of books. I have listened to 30 or 40 books per year for the last 15 years. This one is not far from the top of my list. I bought the hard cover for my wife. I know she will enjoy it too.

I love a good mystery :-)

I liked the story and the narrator, who gave it an old school hard-boiled detective feel/sound. This is the first Harry Dolan book I've read, and I'd definitely read more. Seeing the action through the eyes of various characters gave me a 360 view while keeping the secrets secret. Good suspense, great story, and a main character I want to read more about.

Interesting

Had most of it figured out mid way through, but that didn't stop me from binge listening the last 3 hours.

Made me gasp outloud

Would you consider the audio edition of The Last Dead Girl to be better than the print version?

I didn't read the print version - but the audio edition was flawless.

What did you like best about this story?

Just when you think you have a handle on this story, something changes, and you realize you don't. The "interludes" were shocking, and truly made me gasp in surprise. That doesn't happen to me very often.

Have you listened to any of Michael Kramer’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

First time listening to Michael Kramer. Thought he did an excellent job, although since this story is told in the first person, his voice seemed older than the character.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, too long a story for that.

Any additional comments?

Great story, very good narration. I highly recommend it.

As perfect as a poem!

Absolutely the best listen in years! Excellent story. Wonderful marathon, (Michael Kramer). I listened every spare minute and lost some sleep because I just couldn’t stop. What a great book!

A great, dark read, appropriate reader too.

This was my first Harry Dolan read, and I was way impressed, by the plot, the writing, and the reader. All the characters seemed intelligent (included the deranged ones), which made you care about what they did and what happened to them. Another reviewer said he thought Michael Kramer was a monotonous-sounding reader, but I thought his voice and rendition were an excellent fit to the creepy darkness of this story, the only caution being he sounds like an older man than the protagonist, David Malone. The Last Dead Girl describes an intricate puzzle, keeping you guessing (and listening) until the last piece has fallen into place. Masterful.

The best book in the series

This isn’t just another story in Grey Streets. Harry Dolan’s third novel in the series is really a prequel to the David Loogan series. It is a rollercoaster in the dark with twists and turns that you never see coming. I enjoy the series but I was not as big of a fan of the second novel as I was the first. I had some reservations when I started listening. This story blew me away with this witty dialogue that one is so familiar with in a Harry Dolan novel. The characters were complex. Well thought out. And the plot excellently delivered. This novel is great even if you haven’t read the other two books in the series. There’s no spoilers. And the plot works well as a stand alone.
