About this listen

"If I could have foreseen the future, I would have married the first man who asked me!"

Tongues were set wagging when Elizabeth Markham's glamorous young parents were killed, sinking their only child to the unspeakable class of poor relation. Forced to live with her cruel, miserly uncle Julius, Elizabeth is forbidden to partake in the season's festivities. Marriage is her only escape, and she enacts a daring plan to trick her way into the Duke of Dunster's exclusive house party, to snare one of the eligible dandies sure to dance attendance on her.

Her plan proceeds swimmingly, as Elizabeth flirts with all but the arrogant Lord Charles Lufford, considered to be quite a catch. She ignores him thoroughly until her uncle discovers her deception and Charles saves her - by announcing their engagement!

But Elizabeth's troubles are far from over, for in her absence she had come into an inheritance. And her uncle, along with one other sinister party would rather see her perish than receive it.

I liked the twist and turns this novel took me on and of course a great ending.

Loved this one

I did not like the narrator bc her voice sounded hoarse the whole time! I would like suggest to not do narration of a story if your voice is hoarse!

Narrator

Honestly, it would have been a good story in half the time. I kept asking Alexa "how much longer in this book"...

Too long

I can’t say that there was anything that especially stood out much about this reading. While Charlotte Anne Dore has a lovely voice, the male dialogue often felt very mechanical instead of organic but the female dialogue was spirited.

The story itself was quaint and short, perfect for anyone who’s looking for a touch of romance and an easily sussed out mystery without requiring too much time or attention. There is some wanting, I think, in terms of character development but given it is such a short novel it is to be expected.

Short & Sweet

I am a huge fan of MC Beaton. This narrator ruined the book. I can’t imagine why Audible would use her. Extremely disappointed. The worst I’ve ever heard.

Worst Narration Ever

The reader is good, and the over all story isn't bad. I just had hoped the leading woman would have had more character growth but sadly as is typical of a lot of these books she stayed a damsel in destress to the bitter end.

Not Bad, just predictable

It’s difficult to get behind ignorance and stupidity as well as so many greedy people. But once again MC writes with this in mind. If you like the back and forth of fickle people who believe everything they hear to be true and who overthink every situation, this book is for you. The male lead wasn’t likable until the very end which hindered the growth of the story. It felt rushed, back and forth constantly of hurried feelings. Dull but if you need to have a book on in the background, this will do.

Awful narration! Read as if she was just learning to read and had to pronounce each word individually and not as connected to the rest of the sentence. The hero sounded like he was being harsh with her even when he was sopposed to be tender. Overall story line was fine but somewhat juvenile in tone. Then again that could have seemed moreso due to the narration.

Mediocre clean romance

The story was unusually boring for the author. I’m used to her stories having more weight.

The heroine’s terrible life

The story was quite fun. Always enjoy something from MC Beaton. The narration wasn’t great however it did not ruin the story at all. I increased the speed slightly which enlivened the performance.

Good story, fair narrator
