Featured Article: Dune (2021)—Book vs. Movie

The very first book to win the Nebula Award, Frank Herbert's Dune has long been a fixture of the sci-fi world. It's no surprise, then, that yet another filmmaker has taken a stab at bringing this classic to the screen. The latest effort, by Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve, captures the first half of the epic novel. The reviews have been generally positive, with critics and audiences blown away by the scale and sheer ambition of the adaptation. Overall, Villeneuve's 2021 adaptation of Herbert's sci-fi classic is quite faithful. But in what small ways does the film differ from the book?

Narrated by Frank Herbert

It was wonderful to hear Frank Herbert read exerts from his books. If only he had narrated all his books.

Dune by the author

I loved hearing Frank read his own works. It makes me super happy to have Scott Brick narrate his series (he’s clearly listened to this). He didn’t use the Lynch Translations. I can’t recommend this enough.

Listen at 3/4 Speed!!

It’s a treat listening to passages from Dune novels read by the Author. This recording was made in the 1970s. Original run times of those LP/cassette are over four hours. All the content is there on this three hour download but somebody sped it up a bit making Mr. Herbert sound a bit too squeaky. Replay at 3/4 speed solves this but I sure would appreciate Audible engineers going back to ensure the integrity of this recording matches the original. Well worth a download regardless.

herbert is the best!

Wish he were still around to make more magic for all of us. I did like him narrating in his own voice.

Dune in Frank Herbert's voice.

The audio quality isn't great, but serviceable. What's good is hearing Frank Herbert read sections from Dune and offer some commentary. If you want to pronounce the names and places -- Leto, Chani, Atreides, and more, as Herbert does, this is the best source.

the man himself

To hear Herbert speak the words of Dune. To know how those words are pronounced.

How Would You Say That?

The pronunciation of words like Sietch and Muad'Dib. The reader hears the words in each their own head the way they think these words they've never heard spoken should sound. Hearing how the author heard the words when he wrote them. That is the depth of insight this kind of record provides.

Herbert himself explains

Frank Herbert narrates a 101 class on his Dune series up to the third book. If you have been familiar with the movies or absorbed Dune material elsewhere and yet to read the books, I recommend starting here. Then you can enjoy the books fully immersed in Herbert's voice and purpose, along with getting a leg up on some of the universe. Herbert goes beyond just reading snippets to explain some of the philosophy that drives the series. Technically reading this introduces some spoilers, but none so offensive to ruin Herbert's interwoven narratives of the books, since these snippets are no more spoiling the plot of the whole series than a trailer spoils a movie.
