About this listen

When a palace maid is attacked, Josie and the captain of the guards investigate together. Since one of the suspects is a foreign diplomat and magic expert, they use the opportunity to learn more about sorcery. But it soon becomes clear that he is using them to get to the truth about the palace and the servants' origins.

With unrest in the village, and servants growing impatient for answers, an undercurrent of danger pervades the air. But the most dangerous man of all may prove to be the king himself, because every clue points to him knowing more than he lets on.

As tensions both in and out of the glittering Glancian court rise, the heat between the captain and Josie is a distraction. But is it a welcome one?

Listened to this series while driving 3,500 on vacation with my husband. He actually got quite interested in the series himself! Haven't found a C.J Archer series I don't like yet!

Excellent Vacation Listen!!

It says a lot when the second book in a series is even better than the first (which I enjoyed a lot). The main characters and the side characters are all very well done and not just two dimensional. I really can't wait for the next book to come out. The narration was once again awesome with really good male and female voices.

Even better than the first book in the series!

Nice Continueation of Series

I’m enjoying the books for the most part, but notice a very frustrating pattern with the main character. We’re to believe she’s smart yet continually puts herself in situations where she’s physically harmed, and if it weren’t for dumb luck, she’d have been raped, murdered or both. This writing trope is infuriating. It’s happened repeatedly already and we’re only two books in.

Reconsider this writing trope

I really did love this story with one exception. I did not enjoy the use of the “f” word in many places. I’ve read another series by this author that leaves this expletive out. The authors characters are always interesting and believable. I read reviews by many to try and determine if there was use of this type of language. I wish audible would give some kind of rating or forewarning for those of us who choose not to include in our reading experience.

Excellent story except....
