About this listen

The international best-selling series with over five million copies sold in the US alone!

When Horace travels to the exotic land of Nihon-Ja, it isn't long before he finds himself pulled into a battle that is not his - but one he knows in his heart he must wage. A kingdom teeters on the edge of chaos when the Nihon-Ja emperor, a defender of the common man, is forcibly overthrown, and only Horace, Will, and his Araluen companions can restore the emperor to the throne. Victory lies in the hands of an inexperienced group of fighters, and it's anybody's guess who will make the journey home to Araluen.

Perfect for fans of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, T.H. White’s The Sword in the Stone, Christopher Paolini’s Eragon series, and George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire series.

This is just another great book read by a reader. I love all this books. There were a few cuts in the performance that made it sound like it was skipping parts, that is the only reason I gave the performance a 4. other than that it was a great performance.

Great book

My kid got me to listen to the first book. I quickly burned thru the entire series. The characters all have great depth and personality and the author does an amazing job of painting each scene. I recommend this series to anyone who loves fantasy fiction.

Great storytelling start to finish

the relationship between the girls has developed nicely and the tension between them is palpable. Their brave adventure is inspiring! The story line is very interesting. I loved the Emperor's character and ideals. I think this book is my second favorite of the series so far after the first. I didn't enjoy just how close to reality the political lying, deception and the guilibility of the people is, after all, I read fantasy to escape such things. However, I did enjoy the bravery of the people and the interchange of cultures. It is a good story!

The Emperor's ideals put him in peril. He doesn't back down. His integrity is what you want to see in a leader.

Only thing that threw me off a little was jhon keeting. His voice sounds different in this one. Which in turn makes halt and will’s voices different too. Almost felt like someone else was reading this book

Great story and even better characters!

I liked how the plot was always evolving always changing always coming up with new ways to make the story more intense but never losing track of what the plot Actually was and something I disliked was Probably just The characters There's a lot of names and I Get them confused So if you write another book like this I really hope That you can make the names more memorable And easier to keep crack up as well as just making sure we know where all of our characters are on amapp.

Everywhere Flanagan’s tales range, there are good people afflicted by rogues. In this book, Flanagan’s Nippon account is similar to Tamora Pierce‘s incorporation of Japan in her female knight sagas. Flanagan gets an “A” for Nihon details, but just a “C” for naivety regarding Gaijin being able to comprehend that opaque land, and a “D” for suggesting ease of entry into a cooperative working arrangement. Totally over-the-top optimistic.

Upbeat to the extreme

Any additional comments?

I have enjoyed the whole series. I read the first 8 to my grandsons and liked them so much that I have listed to the last two.
