About this listen

Ahren: Ahren's life consists of being beaten up by his drunkard father or bullied by the village lads. But at the annual suitability tests for apprenticeships, the young boy finds himself selected by Falk, the guardian of the forest, to be his apprentice and his world is turned upside down.

From his new master, he learns the skills of archery and how to fight the Dark Ones. And then, on the day of the Spring Ceremony, there is another unexpected turn of events. He touches the Stone of the Gods and it illuminates for the first time ever. It isn't long before a cantankerous wizard turns up and urges Falk and Ahren into action.

The Naming: Two Einhans have been found but the third is still at large. Time is of the essence. Ahren's Appointment as the 13th Paladin - assisted by the three Einhans - must occur by the winter solstice. If not, He, Who Forces will awaken before his time and plunge the unprepared peoples of Jorath into the depths of darkness.

The Brazen City: The saga of the 13th Paladin continues. Join him and his friends on their adventures in the Sunplains and enjoy meeting his old friends in Deepstone again.

Note: This audiobook includes Books 1-3 in the 13th Paladin series.

I was hesitant to buy this title based on several bad reviews, but 45 hours for a single credit was too enticing. I'm glad I risked it, because it is a great listen! I'll agree the narrator isn't the best, but I got used to it and it didn't interfere with the story.

Ignore the haters!

The author has a little bit of a unique voice, using phrases and references that are a bit older, not really outdated for a fantasy story and not bad in any way other than I had to look a few of them up. I felt like this was a good overall story and for the deaf that it was being a boxed set, I'm very happy with it. The story might be a just a touch on the soft side for me, but we all need someone good to root for once in a while.

Pretty good story really

I came into this with no expectations. what I got out of it is waiting for the 11th book now. The best way I can describe the main protagonist is a simple and dumb teenager. He isn't great or powerful. But, that is what this series needs at the beginning. he grows. and it is a true growth of character that takes past experiences and helps him be a better person and the best paladin. I enjoy the world building.

3 books one credit. A gem

Great start of what seems to be a great series. Looking forward to the next book.

Enjoyed this very PG story

The is a pretty straightforward (though epic) story told over a great many volumes. This story DOES warrant all 13 books however. The real shining star in the Audible Book Series is Gildart Jackson who brings the characters to life, brings emotion to the appropriate areas, and does a overall excellent job making you believe. The one book that he did not narrate just felt off and made it hard to appreciate. Overall a good very well written story told by a Great Storyteller and worthy of the Listen.

Gildart Jackson-Narrator

The characters were well-developed and entertaining; the story likewise engaging. I also like that there is clearly the possibility of continuing the saga!
Sometimes the dialog, vocabulary and/or phrasing was spot-on appropriate, but it seemed that occasionally there it was awkward. Sorry I can’t give an example.
My pet peeve: (Though it now exists in the dictionary), I personally am jolted every time “orientate/orientating/orientated” is used. “Orient” works juuuust fine! If I get a chance to (and I would like to) read it to my kids, I will simply correct it!
A great narrator, though so slow I had to speed it up 1.5x. He read with great animation—esp some battle descriptions!

Great narrator, good story!

It’s got a character you can root for and watch grow. It’s an interesting twist on the group of adventurers save the world trope. Storyline is cleverly written and highly enjoyable. The narrator does a superb job. I plan on reading the entire series!

Fabulous Story

I read this series all the way through by borrowing the books from a friend the first time around. even then it amazed me. of course it gets unpleasantly slow towards the end of the series (the last 6 or so books), but it your just starting you won't have to worry about that for a while. The narrator is great, the world building is great, the story is great. Ignore any initial feeling that this is a Ranger's Apprentice knock off. that feeling will quickly where off. Anyway, one of the main things that is criticized by other listeners is Ahrens intelligence. I would disagree with Ahren being stupid, though he is uneducated he is fairly smart considering the fact that his first schooling experience was after he turned 13. I just wanted address that. The romance in the story is kinda stupid, especially considering that Ahrens love interest is a freaking jerk at first. The author should have introduced her later in the story. Any I highly recommend this story, but make no mistake this is definitely YA.

up there in my favorite books.

The story is compelling, even if some elements are cliche or predictable. Overall I am drawn in and want to hear what happens. The author has great pronunciation and pacing. His character voices are distinct enough to help you follow the story without being grating or distracting.

Quality fantasy

I enjoyed the book because I like fantasy. He introduced many very descriptive characters with names I’d never heard of but could picture in my mind. I also like the fact that he is able to tell an interesting story without offensive language.
