Publisher's summary

A cautionary but optimistic book about the world’s changing climate and the fate of humanity, from Christiana Figueres and Tom Rivett-Carnac—who led negotiations for the United Nations during the historic Paris Agreement of 2015.

The authors outline two possible scenarios for our planet. In one, they describe what life on Earth will be like by 2050 if we fail to meet the Paris Agreement’s climate targets. In the other, they lay out what it will be like to live in a regenerative world that has net-zero emissions. They argue for confronting the climate crisis head-on, with determination and optimism. The Future We Choose presents our options and tells us what governments, corporations, and each of us can, and must, do to fend off disaster.

Critic reviews

"Tom Rivett-Carnac, have penned a book that shepherds climate activism from changing mental states to changing the world...the authors recommend a mindset for climate activism that rests on three attitudes: radical optimism, endless abundance and radical regeneration."Forbes

"Inspiring... A practically minded manifesto for personal action in the face of climate change."Kirkus Reviews

“The Paris Agreement was a landmark for humankind. In this timely and important book, two of the principal creators of that agreement show us why and how we can now realize its promise. I hope it is widely read and acted on.”—Jane Goodall, author of In the Shadow of Man

A few too many stories about imaginating a green future. I was hoping for statistics.

Mandatory for Humanity

I would love to say this book is a mandatory listen for all humanity, and in fact it is. However, while the book touches on many topics we all should think seriously about, its presentation seems too elitist to truly reach out and capture the attention and concerns of the people it needs to address. Despite this point, the books brevity makes it a hopeful starting point.

Let's have an uncomfortable conversation

Mind bending. Not planning on my usual air travel. There are so many things within driving distance I am super interested in.

Must Read/Listen

I wasn't expecting to be uplfited, to find this book to be so helpful in so many ways.

I haven't even finished listening.... however I have listened to Chapter 5 on Stubborn Optimism at
least 3 times. I have listened to Chapter 3, "The World We Must Create", at least twice.

I am looking forward to driving to listen to more. If you care about our planet this book inspires and
offers some very useful tools for being with our climate challenges.

Exceptionally Inspiring

I sincerely enjoyed listening to this book and am planning on buying a paper copy. It provides a clear, data-driven history of where we’re at as a planet and lays out an inspiring roadmap of where we need to go from here to ameliorate our environmental woes. Well done.

Climate Crisis book of the decade!

This book sets the basic framework for how to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. It can be done and MUST be done. This book should be mandatory reading for students everywhere. Our task is daunting, but not impossible!

Excellent!

Excellent book, warrants my first book review. Plus congratulations to Christiana and Tom on their accomplishments on climate agreement. And audiobook performance as good as any professional narrator.
By the way, impressive parallel between climate crisis as explained by the authors, and current pandemic... Importance of optimism. Impact of individual actions on common good: "we all win or we all lose". Importance of international collaboration: what a different situation we would be living if western world had jumped to rescue China. Importance of reducing inequality, even if out of self interest. Science vs populism: difficult battle when mixing politics and social media.
