Publisher's summary

From the number-one New York Times best-selling author of The 48 Laws of Power comes the definitive new audiobook on decoding the behavior of the people around you.

Robert Greene is a master guide for millions of listeners, distilling ancient wisdom and philosophy into essential texts for seekers of power, understanding, and mastery. Now he turns to the most important subject of all - understanding people's drives and motivations, even when they are unconscious of them themselves.

We are social animals. Our very lives depend on our relationships with people. Knowing why people do what they do is the most important tool we can possess, without which our other talents can only take us so far. Drawing from the ideas and examples of Pericles, Queen Elizabeth I, Martin Luther King Jr, and many others, Greene teaches us how to detach ourselves from our own emotions and master self-control, how to develop the empathy that leads to insight, how to look behind people's masks, and how to resist conformity to develop your singular sense of purpose. Whether at work, in relationships, or in shaping the world around you, The Laws of Human Nature offers brilliant tactics for success, self-improvement, and self-defense.

Critic reviews

"In this detailed and expansive guide, Greene (Mastery) seeks to … transform the reader into a 'calmer and more strategic observer', immune to 'emotional drama'. Those are lofty promises, but even skeptics will become believers after diving into Greene’s well-organized text. Overcoming the 'law of irrationality', for instance, leads to the ability to 'open your mind to what is really happening, as opposed to what you are feeling'. Greene’s thoughtful examination of self and society will, for the committed reader, deliver a refreshing and revitalizing perspective." (Publishers Weekly)

Very helpful psychology book

I'm 2 hours into the book and really like the narrator's voice. It's very soothing and calms you down.
The content of the book is very humbling. It makes you appreciate the human nature and look at it from a more empathic perspective rather than hateful . It helps you understand yourself and others better.

I would like to compare this book to the other similar book "Never Split The Difference". This book is more theoretical versus the other book is more how you apply to the real life. Anyhow, both a good books if you want to be a great communicator.

This book did not disappoint

As usual this author did not disappoint. If you have read anything else by Robert Greene, you may notice that most of the same characters and their stories are being retold. But with every new book he writes these stories seem to shed a new light on the person mentioned and show deeper principals to the topics at hand. I don’t think I have ever learnt more about the human condition (myself included) as I have with Robert Greene’s books. At times they are gut wrenching but liberating as well. I highly recommend them all. Especially this one.

Very interesting

Great stories to illustrate the points. Fabulous analysis and mind opening thoughts. I had to listen to it again, and even then I found perspectives that I missed the first time through. The narrator is well inflected and kept the book flowing. All around awesome listen. Well done.

perfect book

Robert Greene just simply writes perfect books. If it is titled the laws of human nature then you will be getting the actual laws of human nature, and you will understand them. This book is like a college course and can be digested over a period of time.

Greene’s Masterpiece

This book goes beyond Greene’s previous excellent works by providing actions we can act on to become “students of human nature” and more effective human beings as a consequence.
