About this listen

The Gambler is a psychologically probing novel concerning the gambling episodes, tangled love affairs, and complicated lives of Alexis Ivanovitch, a young gambling addict; Polina Alexandrovna, the woman he loves; a pair of French adventurers; and other characters. Narrated by Alexis, this short novel is based on Fyodor Dostoevsky's own experiences as a compulsive gambler.

Like so many characters in Dostoevsky's novels, Alexis is trying to break through the wall of the established order and the human condition itself, but instead he is drawn into the vortex of the roulette wheel. This version of The Gambler is the translation by C. J. Hogarth.

Perfect narrator! The only one I know who didn't butcher Russian names. And his French was equally impeccable.
As for the story itself... It's Dostoevsky... Enough said.

I held my breath the second half of the book!

This is the 6th or 7th Dostoevsky audio book that I've listened to on Audible and Michael Kramer is the first narrator I have found that pronounces the names correctly. This is important because the names are repeated so often in Dostoevsky book... Nastasia PhiliPOVNA, Nastasia PhiliPOVNA, Nastasia PhiliPOVNA... No! Stop it! It is Nastasia PhiLIPovna!

Michael Kramer did a great job. I hope he narrates more Dostoevsky books.

Great book, great narration, proper pronunciation
