About this listen

The bestselling author of The Designer presents a sweeping story of blind faith, family allegiance and how love makes one man question everything he thought he knew.

Max Wolff is a committed soldier of the Reich. So when he is sent home wounded, only to discover that his mother is sheltering two young Jewish women in their home, he is outraged.

His mother’s act of mercy is a gross betrayal of everything Max stands for. He has dedicated his life to Nazism, fighting to atone for the shame of his anti-Hitler father’s imprisonment. It’s his duty to turn the sisters over to the Gestapo. But he hesitates, and the longer Max fails to do his duty, the harder it becomes.

When Allied bombers fill the skies of Germany, Max is forced to abandon all dogma and face the brutality of war in order to defend precious lives. But what will it cost him?

Great author

Markus Gabriel can really spin a yarn. Each book is as good as the last. I'll be looking for another one of his books soon.

Wow….

What a powerful story… I listened to this in three days and my heart cried in various parts. I read tons of holocaust fiction and this gave such perspectives that I really hadn’t heard before. So many points were just cruel in how they were resolved but I’m sure historically that’s what could have happened and did to so many.
I miss Max… he was a truly good soul. How utterly imaginable it is to think of not being able to hold a conversation with others about anything other than who you both have lost, and then in old age recount stories of those who only exist for you- with not a single memento that any of them ever lived… I wish the generations today could recognize what real hardship is and appreciate life and the gifts they have…

4.5 stars!

I rarely write a review but this one earned one. in the beginning the war send to be merely a back drop. But the author have us a space to get to know the characters before sending them into the war. It was beautiful, interesting, sad, scary, and joyful. Bad things happen to everyone. It's how we put the pieces back together that reveals our character, wisdom, and true nature.

Wonderful story

I loved this book because it told of a different side than I usually listen to. We must know the German civilians suffered when the Russians invaded and the Americans too. The author did a beautiful job with the characters & the research was in-depth. It’s a beautiful story, I wish everyone would read/listen to it! The narrator was perfect.

An interesting story of WW2

This story is told from the perspective of a young Jewish girl who is hidden from the Nazi's. She travels through Germany with a young Panzer officer at the end of the war. Interesting.

Not memorable

The first half of this story is good, but it drags toward the end. The narration is well done.

Great Read

I loved this one. I felt that it was a unique take/perspective on the humanity of WWII. It held my attention, and I continuously wanted to know what was going to happen next. I thought it was well-performed and well written; and I would recommend to anyone who is a fan of historical fiction.

An interesting view of the Holocaust

I really enjoyed the story, and the narrator was what made the story so interesting. There were several times I had to go around the block several times to find out what was going to happen before leaving the car. It truly was that good. The story was told by people that were not in concentration camps, but were being sheltered in a German attic. There were some gory sad parts, but the rest of the story was worth it. I
