Publisher's summary

Fanny and her groom had been tricked! Parents on both sides, all impoverished, had decided to recoup their families' losses by marrying their children to the progeny of a wealthier neighbor. The joke was on them, however, when it was outed that neither family had a penny to its name.

Charles was not the dark rogue of Fanny's girlish fantasies, but he was chivalrously determined that she should meet someone more appropriate for her than he. And for her part, Fanny was determined that Charles find a woman of greater means who would, perhaps, be the answer to his prayers. Yet as each lover set out to find someone for the other, each was left with the nagging notion that true love might have nothing to do with riches.

Okay

All the shenanigans made this predictable for me from the start, so I ended up skipping some chapters. But Lindy gave a superb performance as usual, which made it worth listening to the end chapters. There are a couple of cute twists at the end.

One of sweeter of M. C. Beaton’s stories

I enjoyed this story quite a bit. It was different than the usual plots. The main characters developed relationship in quite a different way, their casual and naturally growing affection for each other pretending to be “cousins” and thinking of each other as siblings (though in a forced marriage) made for some adorable moments of casual interchange and caring. The HEA I didn’t see coming as it did which was also a nice change. I need appealing voices narrated for the main characters at least, particularly for the male lead if read by a woman, and Lindy Nettleton did that well, also performing nicely varied voices for the other characters too. Recommend if tired of too many half miserable characters who finally come around, or main characters who are forced to half hate each other for whatever reason the plot calls for before coming to senses, etc.
