About this listen

Former head of the Bonnano crime family, Bill Bonnano, and former undercover FBI agent Joe Pistone (aka Donnie Brasco) have collaborated with David Fisher on a riveting thriller about organized crime.

Set in New York City in the mid-1980s, The Good Guys finds the Russian Mafia, the Italian Mafia, and the Feds racing against each other to track down a mysterious professor of Russian languages from Columbia University. Rumors circulate that the professor had been moonlighting for the Russian mob, working on fuel oil deals involving millions of dollars. Now all parties involved will stop at nothing to get their hands on him. The converging manhunts offer listeners a firsthand look at the gritty, in-your-face competition between the Russian and Italian mobs and how each does business.

Excellent narration and informative look

I listened to this book mainly to gather insights about the day-to-day grind of both FBI agents and Italian gangsters. It definitely delivered on this front.

The plot doesn't necessarily shine with intrigue, but the informative asides given by Pistone and Bonanno respectively are great, one-of-a-kind. They really delve into the psychology of their jobs and the cultures that they existed in.

The narrator is great. He nails all the different characters and performs the wiseguy dialogue with some real dramatic skill.

Just okay

Seeing that this was partially written by Joe Pistone and Bonanno and I got it but to my dismay it wasn't quite what I expected. Though, it did have several really good parts and much insight into moblife given who it was written by, I still think there are better choices out there to get when it comes to good mobster books.

Outstanding Inside Look

You feel as if you are right there with the mob or the FBI. The story is told in a unique two perspective way. You can probably read every other chapter and still enjoy the book but it's better to read the entire thing.

It is interesting to read about events from the Cold War era since this book is told in the period of the mid to late 1980's.

Only a couple of mistakes but I'm not sure if they are due to the reader or the author. In either case it isn't enough to take away from the book.

If you are at all interested in mob culture or the FBI this is a great book. It doesn't hurt that it is written by two insiders. The Unabridged version is also better than the abridged since it is read by Stephen Hoye and not the authors. Hoye does a great job with the voices.

Wish it was true

Good book. I'd rate it higher if it was a true story. These guys had to have seen enough to write about real experiences.
