True toughness involves far more than what most of us believe and has far greater influence on our success and fulfillment than we imagine. Toughness is defined by four interdependent elements: Character - who are you and are you secure in your identity? Capability - what are you able to do? Capacity - what are you able to withstand? And commitment - what are you willing to do? Being truly tough is a genuine command over ourselves and an ever-increasing mastery of the mental, emotional, and physical elements that define us and determine the course of our lives.

Publisher's summary
The legendary six-time CrossFit Games champion and Olympic athlete shares lessons from her inspiring story of leveling up her performance, embracing failure, and fiercely taking on impossible goals.
“Champions are built in the mind first, and Tia Toomey understands exactly how to do that.”—Andy Frisella, entrepreneur, creator of 75 Hard and Real AF podcast
Tia Toomey, the world’s fittest woman, has won the CrossFit Games an incredible six years in a row and is undeniably a true warrior. She has also trained for the Winter Olympics in bobsledding, competed in the Summer Olympics in weightlifting, and was a Commonwealth Games gold medalist. She is, in short, one of the most accomplished and dominant athletes in human history.
But for Tia physical fitness is only a small part of overall strength. More important is building mental toughness.
In The Heart Is the Strongest Muscle, Tia shows how she reached elite levels by focusing on her “why.” By always having a clear picture of her purpose—what drives her heart—she can push through even the toughest challenges. From the early days of her fitness journey to the peak performance that has put her atop the podium in the CrossFit Games, Tia also reveals the secrets, struggles, and successes that have made her a killer competitor.
Nothing comes easy, but in The Heart Is the Strongest Muscle, Tia hopes to show you how to build your own unstoppable mindset. Whether you are already a serious athlete or someone looking to conquer a new challenge, you’ll be able to use her methods to keep winning.
Critic reviews
“Tia Toomey is one of the greatest athletes in the history of sports. You don’t become that without a bulletproof mindset. Champions are built in the mind first, and Tia understands exactly how to do that.”—Andy Frisella, entrepreneur, creator of 75 Hard and Real AF podcast
“Tia Toomey knows that being a fierce competitor is about more than just the body. Her wisdom in this book will help keep your mind sharp and heart full.”—Michael Easter, author of The Comfort Crisis and Scarcity Brain
“I have been honored to closely follow the journey and success of Tia Toomey as a high-level CrossFit athlete. But more impressive has been following her development and journey as a person. This book gives a wonderful glimpse into all aspects of her amazing journey.”—Dave Castro, director and programmer of the CrossFit Games

The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

Deena Kastor was a star youth runner with tremendous promise, yet her career almost ended after college, when her competitive method - run as hard as possible, for fear of losing - fostered a frustration and negativity and brought her to the brink of burnout. On the verge of quitting, she took a chance and moved to the high altitudes of Alamosa, Colorado, where legendary coach Joe Vigil had started the first professional distance-running team. There she encountered the idea that would transform her running career: the notion that changing her thinking - shaping her mind to be more encouraging, kind, and resilient - could make her faster than she’d ever imagined possible.

Every step of the way, she has seen the way that our sports systems—originally designed by men, for men and boys—fail young women and girls as much as empower them. Great read of heartfelt wisdom!
"The Heart is the Strongest Muscle" regenerates a refreshing perspective on life's chaos, encouraging readers to delve into their purpose. This no-nonsense approach, akin to a genuine chat with a best friend, resonates deeply. The book's reminder that our heart, determination, and mindfulness are our greatest strengths is both comforting and empowering. Tia-Clair Toomey's genuine care for readers and her humbleness is evident throughout the book, adding an inspiring touch. I hope this impactful read reaches each and every person who picks up this title, sparking a meaningful journey of self-discovery and connection with the why.

Self awareness
Amazing book,
I follow Tia since her first crossfit games and always saw the fire that define her. Is nice
to understand deeper from where that fore comes and how she use it to remain motivated. This book is an asset for any athlete, specially in those moments of doubt.

Great insight and candor.
Well said Tia! At the end of the day natural talent takes you only so far, hard work and sacrifice is imperative to the be the best. She doesn’t sugarcoat it, just honestly breaks down what it takes for her to be the best and stay the best. Well written and read by the author.

Motivation I needed
Most of the training disciplines discussed aren’t new, but valuable hearing it self narrated from the GOAT herself and a needed reminder for me to stay motivated

Admirable

Something for everyone!
The advice and takeaways from this book can help not only athletes but anyone looking to change their mindsets. There are some many amazing takeaways from this audiobook that I am going to purchase a hard copy so I can go back and reread it and mark the things that really stood out to me. I absolutely think, everyone should read this book whether you know who Tia is or not! I LOVE THIS BOOK!
