About this listen

“I know this is going to sound hyperbolic, but when I’m reading Ken Liu’s stories, I feel like I’m reading a once-in-a-generation talent. I’m in awe.” (Jamie Ford, New York Times best-selling author)

“Captivating.” (BuzzFeed)

“Extraordinary.” (The Washington Post)

“Brilliant.” (The Chicago Tribune)

With the release of The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories, Ken Liu’s short fiction has resonated with a generation of listeners.

From stories about time-traveling assassins, to Black Mirror-esque tales of cryptocurrency and internet trolling, to heartbreaking narratives of parent-child relationships, The Hidden Girl and Other Stories is a far-reaching work that explores topical themes from the present and a visionary look at humanity’s future.

This collection includes a selection of Liu’s speculative-fiction stories over the past five years - 17 of his best - plus a new novelette. In addition, it also features an excerpt from The Veiled Throne, the third book in Liu’s epic fantasy series The Dandelion Dynasty.

He also penned the Star Wars novel The Legends of Luke Skywalker.

Recent projects include The Message, under development by 21 Laps and Film Nation Entertainment; Good Hunting, adapted as an episode in season one of Netflix’s breakout adult animated series Love, Death + Robots, and AMC’s Pantheon, with Craig Silverstein as executive producer, adapted from an interconnected series of Liu’s short stories.
Prior to becoming a full-time writer, Liu worked as a software engineer, corporate lawyer, and litigation consultant. He frequently speaks at conferences and universities on a variety of topics, including futurism, machine-augmented creativity, history of technology, bookmaking, and the mathematics of origami.

masterful

Some of the stories were strange, some over my head with conversations on coding and digital "singularity", but ultimately thought provoking and vastly interesting.

Best portrayal of mind-uploading I've ever read

From the POV of the uploaded, to those left behind, to digital natives. Just, perfect.

Gems amongst the dross

There are enough really interesting stories to make it worth the listen. All are nicely written and some are quite lovely. There is a fragment of a longer story that is really intriguing. Why was it included with no indication of where to continue? Overall? A grim vision of our future but poignant.

So Interwoven

I bought “The Hidden Girl and Other Stories” without any suggestions or recommendations from anyone. This is the best book that I’ve read so far this year. I’m a science fiction junkie. All of the stories in this book are so interwoven that you feel like you are reading an anthology, but they are intertwined together. Ken Liu is a remarkable author. These sets of short stories are so well put together that you feel like you are reading one novel.

bit much and repetitive

the short stories start out great but they either drag for too long or become repetitive.

some stories sound like others.

Contains the inspiration for the TV show Pantheon

I got turned on to this one from the TV show Pantheon which is borrowed from a couple of related stories in this completion. They're great! And the other short stories they come bundled with are fascinating, as well.

What an interesting collection of science fiction stories

This book was a really good surprise and I enjoyed it thoroughly. The stories are well plotted, full of imagination. They’re at the same time fantastic and believable and each one told in a way that one appears to be watching a movie they are very well read and brought to life by their readers and they are filled with reflection and of thoughtful life experiences. Congratulations to all that created and made them available to us

ESG Propaganda

ESG propaganda that routinely promotes Heaven’s Gate-esque suicide (Hale-Bopp) via cognitive upload and zero-footprint in favor of saving the environment of Mother Earth.
