About this listen

From the author of The Subdue Series and Reinheit comes a new collection of dark fiction.

Seven original tales of horror.

"They Came to Gordium" - an elderly man is haunted by the crimes of his past.

"Immolate" - a widower detective struggles to solve the connection between a series of eerily similar suicides.

"Sunnydale Wolves" - a romantic stop at a popular overlook turns deadly.

"The Hobbsburg Horror" - a Lovecraftian tale of a weary reporter pulled into an otherworldly story of murder and a lodge with reports of strange colors at night.

"Hobo" - a well-to-do housewife's picture-perfect life is shattered by a home invasion.

"Are You Hungry, dear?" - down on his luck divorcee Jacob Miller, after consuming a free pizza, is possessed by an internal parasite.

"From the Sea" - a tale of an amateur sailor and his wife who are besieged by creatures that come from the sea during a storm.

"Neon Fortune Teller" - Madam Drabardi reads the future of paranoid businessman Ronald Murray who believes his wife is cheating on him, but infidelity is not all Drabardi sees.

"Nostos" - Katherine Adonis journeyed light years to escape the nightmares of her past, but some ghosts can never be escaped.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator. If you love the genre and are not too squeamish, you'll definitely enjoy reading the stories in this collection. Warning! Not suitable for the faint at heart. I would only recommended it to friends who can take it...

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Hobbsburg Horror?

I noticed that there was a lot of cannibalism included in some of the stories. Maybe not my favorite parts...

Which character – as performed by Craig Beck – was your favorite?

I did like Madam Drabardi and that particular tale

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, I had to pace myself and get some of the scenes to... settle.

Any additional comments?

I feel that some of the stories were cut a little too short. They could have benefited from lengthier narrative.

A Little Too Graphic But True Horror Stories

I like starting books knowing as little as possible about them. Sometimes even reading the description is too much because I like to be surprised. This collection of stories was just that - a nice surprise. Some were short, others were quite long, but all were read by the delightful narrator Craig Beck who has a great voice. British accent and creepy in just the right places.

Some stories hinted at more horrific content, but I found all thrilling for certain, and above all, I judge a book's quality by its ability to make me want to hurry back to it quickly. This one certainly did that. I couldn't wait to hit the play button again

I was provided a copy of this book at no charge in exchange for an honest review, and I look forward to other books by this author and narrator. Thomas Flowers is a favorite of mine now.

A nice collection of horror thrillers

I enjoyed some of the stories in this collection of short to very short dark thriller/horror. (Fortune Teller, Are you Hungry and Hobbsburg Horror to name 3 of them). Narration was good. Recommend if you like short horror but highly recommend the author’s book Feast. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Thank You!

Dark Thrillers

A loose collection of short stories that have a common thread linking them together. The author takes you to Texas which has been the transformed into a home for horror. Stories were good entertaining some more creepy some left your skin crawling somewhere gross all we're good. I do add the caveat that some of the stories are in appropriate for younger listeners due to the sexual content. Other than that enjoy. I am not usually squeamish or scared but the stories here well what can i say other than hang on because they are not your usual horror stories.
The one that i remember the most was about the sea (i saw that coming) before it happened.
And the one about the pizza, now that was disgusting..horror comes in all forms.
I received this free for an honest review from the author or narrator.

good horror

I should've known from thThere are a number of gems in this collection, but they are outnumbered by the many half baked tales. Too many in this collection are either nonsensical or just underdeveloped to the point they feel like a random thought someone had and decided to put it to pen with nothing more behind it.

The titular tale was pretty decent, as were a few others, but for the most part, this is an easy pass.

A collection of half-formed thoughts

I want to preface my review with saying that I am a huge fan of the horror genre. I love the books and the movies. I found that I only enjoyed about half of these. The narration got me through the ones I didn't enjoy as much and the ones I really enjoyed kept me going through the whole thing. I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to pick this one up, but if it's on sale or you have extra credits you haven't slated for your favorites, it's not a bad selection for a horror anthology.

A decent horror anthology

I love short stories and this doesn't disappoint. While every story isn't a winner, there are a few that are excellent. I enjoyed them very much.

Love short stories

Some of the stories like Immolate and Hobo were more gory, some were more psychological like the Hobbsburg Horror, some just made me think like They Came to Gordium . One of them actually gave me chills which has never happened before, although I can't remember which one now. This was full of strange happenings, unknowable mysteries, and straight up horror. It was great. The lowered ratings on the narrator is because he seemed to struggle with the American accent, but he had a wonderful resonant voice otherwise, and the lowered ratings on the story is just because sometimes it was a bit graphic for my taste. It won't stop me from eventually listening again though.
