About this listen

Sal used to know his place with his adoptive gay father, their loving Mexican American family, and his best friend, Samantha. But it's senior year, and suddenly Sal is throwing punches, questioning everything, and realizing he no longer knows himself. If Sal's not who he thought he was, who is he?

This humor-infused, warmly humane look at universal questions of belonging is a triumph.

Critic reviews

"Friendships, family, grief, joy, rage, faith, doubt, poetry, and love - this complex and sensitive book has room for every aspect of growing up!" (Margarita Engle, Newbery Honor-winning author of The Surrender Tree)
"Narrator Robbie Daymond's soft, calming tone is appropriate for the peaceful world of 17-year-old Sal.... Daymond's narration, though low-key, gives rounded portraits of all the story's characters and doesn't minimize Sal's heartache or his attempts to control his temper." ( AudioFile)

The story is about how life happens. there is less of the normal drama of a novel. this is not a three act story but it is a beautiful depiction of life.

This is life

The story was amazing. I love the author. My only complaint is that the narrator’s version of a girl’s voice is not good. He had that cliche version that people use.

Such a great story

Mid, the voice over could have been better if Sam had a voice actor but it was the same dude, but no hate he did good.

I just want to say that I love the way his books make me feel. I love that there's no real plot, we just get to live with the characters for a snip-it of their lives. I love the way the author describes what's in the hearts of his characters. I just feel so good all over... I hope someone is loving this author. Cause I want to put him in my pocket and keep him with me always. I finished this book on my birthday, and there couldn't have been a better gift for myself.

Happy Birthday to me!

Another Saenz story that hits the heart and pulls the strings. I love the author's ability to develop characters that I find so similar to my own experiences. Excellent storytelling. A great read for a teen or adult.

Heartfelt and endearing, although a little simple

A well written and thoughtful story of young adults struggling with life’s most painful and beautiful moments. Stories of the true power of love and what it means to stand up for and with those we love. Also a story about loss and how we get through it.

A very moving story about loss and our ability to keep living and loving
