About this listen

Lisbeth Douglas works as a pilot, mechanic, and flight instructor. As a lady flyer in the 1930s, she works in a male-dominated profession. Fearful of ridicule, she keeps her dream of becoming a test pilot a secret. A cocky airplane salesman arrives in Saplingville and sets up shop at the airport. He steals her heart, but will never take possession of her dreams.

Paul Williams is more comfortable designing airplanes than flying them. To please his father, he takes a job as an airplane salesman. His boss sends him to the deep South, where he meets a ravishing daredevil of a woman. His heart takes a nosedive at the first sight of her. How can he give up his controlling ways and let her soar?

A heartfelt historical romance!

Story Impressions –

Will she sacrifice her dream for Paul’s love or will she go after her dream, even if it means losing him forever? A free-spirited heroine and a rugged hero, both lovers of aviation, propel the plot. It’s easy to see how alike Paul and Lisbeth are yet both too stubborn to admit it. I connected with Lisbeth right away. As a woman, I love reading an independent heroine willing to risk it all to make her dream a reality. The heartfelt romance between her and Paul is such a joy to read.

He'll help The Lady Flyer soar.

Lisbeth Douglas is working for her brother’s airplane business, but her dream is to become a test pilot. She’s working for her brother in Saplingville Georgia. Paul Williams is coming to Saplingville to use it as a base of operations for selling airplanes. His dream is to design airplanes. When they meet sparks fly. What happens when the airplane salesman meets The Lady Flyer?

Lisbeth is working on a plane at her brother’s airport. She’s doing what she’s always wanted to do. An incoming airplane has everyone taking notice. Her attention is caught by the plane and the man flying it. Paul Williams is looking for a base of operation to sell airplanes in the south. He’s surprised to find a woman working there and ends up saying the wrong thing. Paul is impressed by what he sees of Saplingville, Georgia. He settles in and has an office at the airport. Lisbeth makes sure she’s wearing new clean coverall and looks nice when Paul comes back from his recent trip. He’s invited to attend the birthday party of her nephew. Paul sees another side to Lisbeth. They almost kiss and the chemistry between them is strong. Lisbeth agrees to a date with Paul. She has been making inquiries about becoming a test pilot and is discouraged by a recent refusal. Their first date is a success if a little contentious. Paul asks for another date and Lisbeth agrees. They’re growing feelings for each other has them taking an overnight trip to Atlanta, where a physical relationship starts. They talk about their dreams and their families. Lisbeth doesn’t want to marry yet. A letter from Paul’s hometown brings them to Wichita for a job interview for Lisbeth as a test pilot. They spend the night together. He realizes that Lisbeth is the woman he wants to have forever in his life. Paul learns about an air race that the winner gets $5,000. Both Lisbeth and Paul enter the contest with others. The more Paul learns about Lisbeth the more he’s falling in love with. Lisbeth realizes her feelings for Paul are stronger than she’s expected. After talking over the race, its decided that she and Frankie will enter the air race and they begin plotting the route taken. Paul’s dealings with his father come to a head when the father calls to demand that Paul take the future the father wants. Lisbeth really enjoyed the trip to Wichita and is determined to win the race as a way to make sure she becomes a test pilot. She learns that Paul and his best friend also enter the race. Lisbeth and Frankie don’t see anyone else while racing. At the end of the race they come in first and Paul’s team in sixth. Lisbeth is offered the test pilot position. Paul’s father and his ex-girlfriend put a wedge between Paul and Lisbeth. He can’t figure out why she won’t talk to him. His best friend shows him a Wichita paper with his engagement in it. At first, he’s giving up on his relationship with Lisbeth. Paul on a trip home to bring his boss an update on his sales quits the job and looks into a job as an airplane engineer. He also moves his father out of the house he inherited from his mother. Paul takes a trip back to Saplingville. A talk between Paul and Lisbeth gives them the future dreams they’ve been wanting.

Jane Lewis continues the Saplingville, Georgia series with The Lady Flyer. A high-flying story of love and passion that will have the reader soaring into the clouds. A young woman with a dream and a daredevil attitude reaches high and with hard work and perseverance is able to make her way in a male dominated world. With the right man at her side her dreams will continue.

Yassssssss!!

You know you have a good book when the very masculine voice that is Dawson McBride can deliver a wonderful female persona as well as a charismatic male counterpart. This book was awesome.

It's set in the barely disguised misogynistic past when women needed to be seen and not heard. Our Lady Flyer was not having any of that! This was a great story and a wonderful historical reminder of the genesis of the aviation industry.
