About this listen

In the center of Luster towers an enormous tree that is the Heart of the World. Now the tree is wounded, pierced by a tunnel that connects it to Earth. Through that tunnel strides Beloved, the ancient enemy of the unicorns, followed by an army of Hunters eager to destroy every last unicorn.

At the center of this great struggle is the human girl, Cara Diana Hunter, who sets out with her friend, the gryphon Medafil, to ask a dragon to aid the unicorns. As she travels, Cara meets not only the dragon but a mysterious stranger who may hold the key to Luster's secrets.

As the threads of destiny weave about her, Cara will discover at last the truth about the unicorns - a truth that brings hard choices for everyone she loves as this magnificent, multistranded saga thunders to its astonishing conclusion.

Editorial reviews

This is book four of an enchanting series about unicorns, amulets, dragons, and other fantastic creatures, which began with Into the Land of the Unicorns. When the tree that shelters Luster and is also the heart of the world is hurt, the unicorns must fight for their lives. Bruce Coville is both author and main narrator, and he's perfect for the job. As always, the Full Cast family is splendid at enhancing this multilayered story with countless characters. Along with the ambiguities that accompany battles of good versus evil, there are quotes from Sun Tzu's Art of War and surprising humor. Since the story is lengthy and abounds with details, audio is the perfect format.

Some technical issues

It seems that several of the chapters in the last portion of the book repeat themselves, but none are missing. It's just a bit annoying if your hands are full and you can't skip to the next chapter immediately.

That said, still giving 5 stars. I read the first book in the Unicorn Chronicles when I was in grade school and now I'm finishing the series as an adult.

so good!

I read the first book in my youth and really enjoyed it. somehow I never realized it was a series until now. The whole story was amazing and so well written. so many beloved characters and I was surprised at how much death there was. I feel this had just the right amount of detail about the battles to give a clear picture without being gratuitous about the violence. Definitely one of my absolute favorites even now as an adult.

Surprising Conclusion

Would you listen to The Last Hunt again? Why?

Yes and No. Yes because I love this series and no because when you get into the "nineties chapters" it plays each chapter twice. You have to use the skip option to get to the next chapter.

What did you like best about this story?

This is not a short book. Let me just start by saying that it will take you a while to get through this book. What I liked about it though is that it didn't just give you a "The End" ending. Each of the characters were given their own chapters and this conclusion that some of us have been waiting years to read came to an epic conclusion that was well thought out and very well written by the author.

What does Bruce Coville bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Bruce Coville's audio books of The Unicorn Chronicles brings every character to life by giving them their own voice. Unlike a dramatized version, his unabridged versions actually follow along with the books while still having an entire cast re-in-acting the beautiful and wondrous world that is Luster, the land of the unicorns.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There were some moments that gave me the jaw dropping feeling. Other times I laughed and I even cried at the end.

Any additional comments?

The only thing that I would change is the doubling of the nineties chapters. It gives the audio book 2 hours of extra reading that it really doesn't need. This should be changed and an updated version should be sent to everyone who has purchased and downloaded this audiobook.

Underappreciated Wonder

I absolutely adore this entire series. It does a masterful job of taking you on a winding journey through every type of emotion. If you are the type to yell at a tv when a character you like does something foolish or is in danger then you will certainly do that with this series. It actually suprises me that this series is not as widely known. i believe that is the expectation that a story about unicorns can only be dull and full of butterflies and rays of sunshine. While there are good moments, terrifying and gruesome moments exist too.

I believe these books should be as popular as the wizarding books that people all over the world know and love. I have read them and can say that these books contain just as much complex character compositon and rich character development.

Wonderful series, but this book is weakest.

I've loved the Unicorn Chronicles and the magical land of Luster from a very young age. I remember my excitement when I found the final book had been released a pretty good while after I'd read the first few. I enjoy the book, and this audio recording is done very well, but I do find this last book just doesn't hold quite the same magic -- I felt the same when I read the physical copy as well. It's a captivating story, but I feel that the pacing is off. This book feels like the author was trying to fit too much into too little space. We jump back and forth between characters too quickly and too much is going on. It makes it feel rushed and a little hard to follow. I really think all the information given in this last book would have been better presented by splitting it between two books. The pacing just feels so different from the first three, as if we were taking a leisurely walk through this magical universe and then suddenly started sprinted. Anyway, it's still a good story and this series is worth reading! It's certainly worth noting that this series has stuck with me from childhood to the ripe old age of 27, and I enjoyed it enough to reread it yet again in audio form -- and I still have my well-loved hard copies, too. Not every book or series I've read can make that claim.
