About this listen

When Olivia Villalobos finds a bloodstained love letter she endeavors to deliver it before Chief Inspector Sedeño finds it in her possession.

A city along the southern coast of Puerto Rico emerges in the aftermath of the Spanish-American War. Olivia, daughter of a drunkard police investigator who never knew the truth behind her mother’s disappearance, finds a bloodstained love letter in the hidden compartment of her father’s coat. Convinced it belonged to the man recently found dead she sets out to deliver it to the Labyrinth of Love Letters - a mysterious place believed to be an urban legend where the transients of forbidden love leave missives for one another. She enlists the help of Isaac Quintero to find the Labyrinth and they soon realize their quest has opened the door into Old Sienna’s darkest secrets - the perils, madness, and depth of tragic love.

Extraordinary story!

The audiobook of The Last Valentine is a poetic symphony for the ears and offers a visual imagining of Puerto Rico right after the Spanish American war. The story, itself, is a love letter written for all those who loved deeply, requited or not. This is an era of nobility and power designed to keep life clear of any scandal that could ruin their good names. Olivia is the product of a true love, but a secret love. She lives with her father and she doesn't know for sure what happened to her mother, but she had wonderful memories. Isaac is a young teacher who has loved Olivia from afar, and even though they spent all of their life together, he never had the courage to tell her, but he knew they were meant to be together. It's a cautionary tale of knowing the difference between physical love and true love. *Physical love requires the feeling of a caress, but true love is felt in the heart from a distance, and remains pure.* This is the crux of the story and at the end, Olivia and Isaac find true love.
The narration was very well done by Chiquito Joaquim Crasto, with a pleasant voice and accent, especially suited for the setting in Puerto Rico.

romeo and juliet??

What a web!! How love endures is a mystery, but an amazing gift. I cried silent tears at the end. A wonderful story. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review. The narrator did a great job bringing it to life. The volume seemed a bit too low for my old ears.

Love Story

So many different stories of love wrapped up in a mystery. All I read from other reviews was that this was a true love story and I whole heartedly agree. True love, unrequited love, lost love, tragic love. It was all there. It was all about the labyrinth of love letters. I don’t think I can explain much more without giving away spoilers, but the mystery kept me on my toes. It was more political than I thought and I enjoyed how far the story goes.
