About this listen

In Heather B. Moore's enthralling 1840's historical romance, Heart of the Ocean, Eliza Robinson has turned down the very pretentious Mr. Thomas Beesley's marriage proposal. As a business partner of Eliza's father, Thomas quickly discredits the family and brings disgrace to the Robinson name.

While her father scrambles to restore his good name in New York City, Eliza flees to the remote Puritan town of Maybrook to stay with her Aunt Maeve. Although relieved to be away from all- things-male and unforgiving gossip columns, odd things start to happen to Eliza, and she is plagued by a ghostly voice. Her aunt's explanation? That Eliza is being haunted by a woman who died of a broken heart twenty years ago.

After Aunt Maeve is tragically killed, Eliza's life is put in danger as she tries to uncover the mystery of her aunt's death. She encounters Jonathan Porter in Maybrook, whose presence in the town seems suspicious, yet she finds herself drawn to him. When she discovers that Jonathan's dark secrets may be the link between the dead woman who haunts her and her aunt's murderer, Eliza realizes that Jonathan is the one man she should never trust.

Great book!

This was a gift\promo\ free and has no bearing on my free will, or opinion. I couldn't put it down. I really recommend this story. I loved the mystery, and romance. I was surprised by whodunit. I loved the ending.

Murder meets romance meets ghost

Heart of the Ocean by Heather B. Moore:

Story: 4.5 stars

I truly enjoyed Heart of the Ocean. This was an intriguing and gripping plot! It’s a murder mystery with clean romance and a ghost thrown in for good measure! Intense, exciting, full of twists and turns and true love winning out against all odds.

I listened to this on the airplane and the time flew by as I was transported to the world Ms. Moore creates.

After reading some of the reviews, I’ve realized that this book has a bunch of historical mistakes. I was ignorant of these mistakes and so was able to almost completely enjoy the story. (Ignorance can, indeed, be bliss!)

My pet peeve was the use of ‘thou are’, ‘thou will’, etc. instead of ‘thou art’, ‘thou wilt’ and so on. It sounded so wrong to my ear. I suppose it’s been my exposure to the King James version of the Bible that ‘thou art’ and ‘thou wilt’ just flow better for me.

Narration: 3.5 stars

Ms. Spencer did a good job! Her expressions and reading speed were decent and she was able to do believable male voices. Her British accent wasn’t ideal, but it wasn’t offensive, either.

*poor, **ok, ***good, ****very good, *****something special

Historical Look of 1840’s

New England and the Puritan communities, a different world for Eliza. Partner of her father showed his true color when she refused him, and in turned the family was hurt. Going to her Aunt, she in counters a Ghost of someone who lived in the house..Then her aunt is killed, how much more can a young woman take. With Jonathan son of the Ghost at her side as suspects. A time of the 1849’s, when things were to be prime and proper. Not dealing with love triangles, ghosts and murder. A good historic look at the Puritan’s. The narration was good. Given audio ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion

I loved the mystery and romance elements. There were parts that were kind of spooky and I thought they did a great job emphasizing them.

I've never heard Erin Spencer before.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I wanted to listen to it all at once but had to break it up into about four sessions. I found time at the end so I could finish it.

Well crafted romance with a mystery interwoven

Heather B. Moore's excellent writing is on display in this lovely novel. The writing is clear, the character development strong, and the plot pacing is excellent. The clues dropped along the way help you discover the mystery, and there are no loose ends that are not addressed by the end. Well worth the time to listen!

Just okay

After listening to this Audible book I wish that I had read it instead. The narrator was choppy and her voice inflections were no where near what they should be in reading a story. Narrators need to convey what they honestly believe the author is trying to convey in emotion and inflection. I don't believe this was the case for this book.

The book was fairly good just a little odd with the ghost giving one idea to Eliza at the beginning and another idea to her at the end. Plus the ghost said different things to different people. She was verbally angry to some and kind to others that she trusted. Typical for ghosts that are left behind on earth she wanted to have her murder solved and her body to be placed in a grave.

Amazing, adventurous story of a wounded soul, mysterious happenings and true love! Intense, scary moments, a damsel in distress and a knight in shining armour...who could ask for more?!!

Captivating story

I’m glad I gave Heart of the Ocean a chance and listened to it. It’s a paranormal mystery which isn’t my usual genre, but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It’s historical fiction with a gothic atmosphere. I couldn’t figure out the mystery until the very end. Ms. Moore is such a versatile writer. I’ve enjoyed all of her different genres. Erin Spencer did a great job with the narration.
