From New York Times best-selling author Michael Connelly, a new thriller introducing a driven young detective trying to prove herself in the LAPD.

Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none, as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor.

But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn. Against orders and her own partner's wishes, she works both cases by day while maintaining her shift by night. As the cases entwine, they pull her closer to her own demons and the reason she won't give up her job, no matter what the department throws at her.

Great new character for Michael Connolly. Another action filled police drama with intricate twists and turns.
As a great fan of Detective Harry Bosch this was a good read .
Enjoyed the book but I must confess Harry is the best.

This was a good distraction while crossing the US on a very full plane. Liked the story, liked the narrator. Give it a shot!

It wasn't terrible, but also definitely not up to the standard of his earlier writing.

Just not as good as a "Bosch" book

Looking forward to many more. Complex, believable and gripping. All character development really well done.

Great, great.... great!

I could hardly finish this book because poor narration made it impossible to distinguish one character from another, which rendered the book boring. I'm surprised Michael Connelly didn't veto releasing this audio version.

Horrible Narration

It was hard to stop listening. Took three days to knock it off. Well, structured and a cliffhanger to the end

One can tell that this a Connelly’s book: high level of energy, plots very well structured, attention to detail, meaningful dialogues and growing suspense.…Connelly introduces a brand new character, Renee Ballard, who is a smart, tough and dedicated female cop operating in LA. However Renee has many (too many ?) similarities with Bosh : she is lonely by choice, seems to lack the capability to reach out emotionally to the (very few) people she likes and has plenty of enemies ”within” (i.e. in the police structure). So, it is up to Connelly to develop more the character of Renee, make her less of a female Harry Bosh and prove us that he is not like other male authors that had a harder time when writing about a female lead character.
All in all , my book rating of three stars (“worth reading”) may be severe, but the expectations with Connelly are always exceptionally high…

A timid debut for Connelly's new detective....

The voice of this audiobook was not a great choice for this book. Made a very good storyline, torturous to listen to.

Droaning voice.

Hopefully the beginning of another great series!
can't wait to see what Renee will do next.

Magnificent!
