About this listen

“I do not want people to be very agreeable, as it saves me the trouble of liking them a great deal.”
Jane Austen at her witty, observant, intelligent, and sympathetic best, in this collection of her letters written to family and friends.

Compiled by her niece Fanny Knight’s son Edward Hugessen Knatchbull-Hugessen (the first Baron Brabourne), and edited by Sarah Chauncey Woolsey, this collection includes a preface written by the editor and notes from Lord Brabourne. It was originally published in 1892.

The cover art includes a sketch of Jane Austen by her sister Cassandra, to whom most of her letters are addressed, and an image of her handwriting. This edition of The Letters of Jane Austen was published in 1908 and is in the public domain.

Heartfelt and Insightful

The letters themselves gave a very heartfelt and insightful look at Jane Austin's life, her family, her friends, the culture, dress and events of her time. This is something that is so needed, and which in this world we don't have as very very few people write letters to each other. Kate Reading was wonderful as a narrator and kept me engaged the entire time.

To be in the life of this wonderful writer

she was the Instagram of her time. loved the ways he found joy in her correspondence with her sister. They even kept dates and appointments. Kate Reading made this seem so fascinating. her voice is perfect. if you like historical, it's a great audio book that will make you smile at her faithful letter writing.

Too much who's who.

Hard to keep the people straight. Jane Austin, seemed to me, to enjoyed the frivolous life of entitlement. Not what I was expecting. The book rambles on about balls, shopping, clothes, dinners, traveling to visit friends. Not much in substance. I returned the book.
