About this listen

Jane Austen’s most popular novel, originally published in 1813, some 17 years after it was first written, presents the Bennet family of Longbourn. Against the background of gossipy Mrs. Bennet and the detached Mr. Bennet, the quest is on for husbands for the five daughters. The spotlight falls on Elizabeth, second eldest, who is courted by Mr. Darcy, though initially she is more concerned with the fate of her other sisters. This marvelous account of family life in Regency England is read with customary panache by Juliet Stevenson.

Juliet Stevenson does a masterful job of bringing to life perhaps the greatest British novel of the 19th century. Jane Austen’s strengths are her absolute command of the English language, her vivid character portrayals, and her sense of humor. Juliet Stevenson does full justice to each of these strengths.

If you can listen to only one recording of this great novel, make it this one.

The perfect novel read by a brilliant narrator.

So great to find this book read by Juliette Stevenson. She’s one of the best with Jane Austen. The only off thing is she sometimes replaces a word with a throat clearing sound. It’s a bit bizarre and not infrequent. I suppose it’s a copyright issue but I wish that wasn’t done.

Great book and reader

Juliet Stevenson is quite frankly the gold standard in audible recordings. The story is as always, wonderful, but I do have a complaint. Why does she *ahem* over the names of certain towns and certain peoples? I found that *ahem* most annoying and don’t recall it happening in my other versions of this book. What’s the deal with that?

Love it of course

Her interpretations of Mrs. Bennett and Lady Catherine de Bourgh were good. Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, so-so. I do not care for her choices for Jane — too slow and airy. I have yet to find an audiobook recording of P&P that I love.

I thoroughly enjoyed Juliet Stevenson's performance of North & South, so I purchased this without listening to a preview. I've already read P&P several times and watched the BBC miniseries and the movie, so I wanted to try out the audio book.

I was disappointed by the nasal and slightly harsh quality her voice has during the narrator parts as well as Elizabeth's dialogue (I know for Caroline Bingley it's intentional). The emotion, flow, and expression are fantastic, but the nasal tone became very grating at times, and I had a hard time getting through some parts. It might just be a natural change in Ms. Stevenson's voice, and this is purely my preference. There is also some inconsistency with the voices, sometimes even mid sentence. Unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to listen to this very often, which is a shame since the performance is otherwise very enjoyable.

A classic story, a fantastic but slightly tiring performance

Such an amazing book, and what a lovely and dedicated performance! Stevenson’s narration gave so much life and energy to it!

A classic, performed beautifully

The only thing I didn’t enjoy is the inconsistency of narration with certain characters especially with Lizzy. However, I am a huge fan of Jane Austen and Juliet Stevenson and I enjoyed it more than any other versions.

Beautiful story beautiful narration

I would like some of the narration to be a little faster but speeding it up made Elizabeth too fast so I had to leave it but otherwise by far the best narration of one of my favorite Austen reads. I often choose which Juliet Stevenson narration I’m going to read rather than which book - she is outstanding and can make any audiobook she narrates the greatest pleasure.

By far the best Jane Austen narrator Juliet Stevenson’s Pride and Prejudice is the most enjoyable of the four versions I own

The subtle satire of Jane Austen's novels is often mistaken for romance. Juliet Stevenson conveys this sharp wit with a beautifully subtle performance. This is a favorite reading and is highly recommended.
