About this listen

Having been booked to give a talk at Fethering Library, successful author Burton St Clair invites his old friend Jude to come along. Although they haven't met for 20 years, Jude is not surprised to find that St Clair hasn't changed, with his towering ego and somewhat shaky relationship with the truth.

What Jude hadn't been suspecting, however, was that the evening would end in sudden, violent death. More worrying, from Jude's point of view, is the fact that the investigating police officers seem to be convinced that she herself was responsible for the crime. With the evidence stacking up against her, Jude enlists the help of her neighbour Carole.

I hated it that Jude was being implicated in the murder that took place in this book. But the final solving of the crime by Carol and Jude brought immense satisfaction. This is a fun book for readers of golden age mysteries. There is the usual cast of old and new colorful characters that make this series so enjoyable! Carol is her usual frustrating self. And, unexpectedly, the ladies finally did bring in the police. Of course, this is after they (Carol and Jude) have solved everything to their own satisfaction.

Is Jude going to go to prison?!?!

I am a big fan of the Fethering mysteries, having listened to all of them!

I really was just happy to find another instalment. It's not the best of the series, but definitely worth listening to if you enjoyed any of the other books in the series.

Carol and Jude Solve it again :)

Simon Brett is not able to do women’s voices. Therefore he ought to find a performer who is able to.

Imperfect performance

Enjoyed the story-and no, there was no “tacking on” of a subplot to increase the length of the book. Simon Brett clearly had fun ribbing faux intellectuals—academics, poets—even mystery writers and, of course, pretentious Americans. (His accent was a hoot.) Some laugh-out- loud moments. I liked having the usual serene Jude unsettled fo a change. Quite a delightful read.

Lots of Fun

I can’t get enough of Carol and Jude. I really enjoyed this series and wish both that the books were longer and that the series could go on and on.

I love this series

I've listened to almost all of the Fethering books and this is the best one yet. I was looking for something light to read at bedtime but this turned out to be a (virtual) page turner. I listened to it as I did my household chores, I listened to it on walks, and sometimes just sat and listened to it - unusual for me.

Simon Brett is a great reader as well as a great writer - his performance is at least as good as the other excellent narrators for the series. I highly recommend The Liar in the Library.

The Best in a Great Series

In addition to being a brilliant writer, he is a great narrator - of men’s and women’s voices!

Simon Brett is amazing!

Loves the description. The relationship between The characters is wonderfully relatable and the description of there thought is pure genius.

Wonderful use of language.

The lack of character and story development is unlike this writer who has done much better, and while it is OK for a cozy, it is only barely entertaining, unfortunately. Recommend writers other works over this one.

Story and character development are thin, and this writer has written much better
