About this listen

David Brainerd (1718-1747) was a missionary to the Native Americans in Delaware, New York, New Jersey, and Eastern Pennsylvania. Edited by the eminent Puritan theologian and Preacher Jonathan Edwards, The Life and Diary of David Brainerd (1749) became a source of inspiration and encouragement to many Christians, including the theologian John Wesley and missionaries such as William Carey and Jim Elliot. Its major impact on the Protestant missionary movement of the 19th and early 20th century can hardly be overstated. For many early missionaries the Diary was like a second Bible. Brainerd faced many challenges in his work, including depression, loneliness, and physical illness, but his single-minded devotion to God served as a stable anchor.

I was unaware how often this saint to the Lord Jesus dealt with melloncholy and self-doubt. He would return to the truth that any good we do is my God's power, and not our own. He gave glory to Our Lord!

A Faithful Servant of God, Who Often Struggled

Very convicting and relatable in more ways than you would imagine if you are a believer even 275 years removed from the man's life. An insightful biography straight from David's personal journals that were never intended to be made public until just before his death.

The cost of true belief.

This one was hard to get through. One can never really fully understand the internal struggles of another but it was still hard to hear all his struggles. What perseverance he had for God’s glory.

Heart wrenching story

This audiobook is a great encouragement for those saints who desire to live all for God in this present evil age. May the Lord prosper the hearing of this audio.

Great Inspiration

It is with great and humble submission that this story of the ongoing melancholy and suffering of this saint is all too familiar. It is eerily similar what wrestling this man had in his spiritual walk with the Lord. May all who read this grow in grace and in the power freely given to the called by Christ Jesus. Amen.

All praise and glory to the Lord for His ministers

Today I feel the Lord’s blessing, Today I am far from the Lord. A whole book of this, over and over and over and over.

Can’t take this book.

I’m 4 hours into this and I can sum up his diary thus far as “I love God but am super depressed”

I sure hope it gets better as this constant focus on his depression is tough to listen to.

It reminds me of Martin Luther BEFORE he discovered the full grace of God.

This is basically this guy reading from a diary at a tempo and in a monotone that I can probably use to help fall asleep. It may be okay for some people but in my case it is really hard to focus on and I probably wasted a credit. Oh well live and learn I guess

Not what I expected
