Sarah Beth Durst
About this listen
Award-winning author Sarah Beth Durst has been praised for her captivating novels that merge the darkly imagined with very real themes of self-discovery and destiny.
In The Lost, we'll discover just what it means to lose one's way...
It was only meant to be a brief detour. But then Lauren finds herself trapped in a town called Lost on the edge of a desert, filled with things abandoned, broken and thrown away. And when she tries to escape, impassible dust storms and something unexplainable lead her back to Lost again and again. The residents she meets there tell her she's going to have to figure out just what she's missing - and what she's running from - before she can leave. So now Lauren's on a new search for a purpose and a destiny. And maybe, just maybe, she'll be found...
Against the backdrop of this desolate and mystical town, Sarah Beth Durst writes an arresting, fantastical novel of one woman's impossible journey... and her quest to find her fate.

Story
Therese Wolley is a mother who has made a promise. She works as a secretary, shops for groceries on Saturdays, and takes care of her two girls. She doesn’t dwell on the fact that her girls are fatherless, mostly because her own father abandoned her before she was born and she has done just fine without him. Even though her older daughter regularly wakes with nightmares and her younger one whispers letters under her breath, she doesn't shift from her resolve that everything will be fine.

Story
In the 12 unforgettable tales of Lesser Known Monsters of the 21st Century, the strange is made familiar and the familiar strange, such that a girl growing wings on her legs feels like an ordinary rite of passage, while a bug-infested house becomes an impossible Kafkaesque nightmare. Each story builds a new world all its own: A group of children steal a haunted doll; a runaway bride encounters a sea monster; a vendor sells toy boxes that seemingly control the passage of time; an insomniac is seduced by the Sandman.

Story
Even and Odd are sisters who share magic. Lately, though, it seems like that’s the only thing they have in common. Odd doesn’t like magic, and Even practices it every chance she gets, dreaming of the day she’ll be ready to be a hero. When the hidden border between the mundane world the sisters live in and the magical land they were born in shuts abruptly, the girls are trapped, unable to return home. With the help of a unicorn named Jeremy, they discover a wizard is diverting magic from the border to bolster her own power.

Story
Claire’s grown up triple-checking locks. Counting her steps. Second-guessing every decision. It’s just how she’s wired—her worst-case scenarios never actually come true. Until she arrives at an off-the-grid summer camp to find a blackened, burned husk instead of a lodge—and no survivors, except her and two other late arrivals: Reyva and Mariana. When the three girls find a dead body in the woods, they realize none of this is an accident. Someone, something, is hunting them. Something that hides in the shadows.

Good book, not a romantic comedy.
I did enjoy the book and it was well written, and well performed. Audible lists it as a romantic comedy, but it is a drama. Period. Horribly sad and parts, It also leaves you to figure out the ending on your own. I think it would have been much better had I known going in it was going to a heart wrenching drama.

Loved it!
I loved this wonderfully unique story! The author definitely thought out of the box when she wrote this one, and the narrator did a great job bringing it to life.

Captivated at HELLO
This book takes off right away. I listen to my books when I take my walk every day. This is the first book that I actually doubled my walk (in the 90 degree weather) just to listen longer.
It is a great story - very well told and the ending is a tad upsetting but I still enjoyed the book so much I was sad when it ended.

A Story Unlike Anything I've Read!
Any additional comments?
I loved that this book was such a new premise to me. It was just a little slow to start, mostly just because I was just as confused as the main character. But it wasn't long before I was sucked into the mystery. I even had trouble stopping and going to bed!
I will say though that while this has a little romance, there's no steam at all, so to me it's mostly a mystery, rather than romance.
I really enjoyed the story overall, but was a little dissatisfied by the ending, while I think it's an HEA, it felt a bit incomplete. I'm hoping we get a sequel to truly finish the story.

Best Book I've Read in a Couple Months
I found myself in a book lull the past couple of months, just reading to keep up with my yearly book goal, but this book changed all that. Halfway through the book, I realized that the publishers might now intend to publish any more of the trilogy, and well I just can't fathom it! I was totally enthralled with this book. It was clever, deep, and fantastical! I simply can't imagine not being able to see what comes next for Peter, Claire, and Lauren. I'm so glad I chose this listen on a whim; it ruined my sleep schedule and my daytime agenda, because I simply could not stop!

Good read
Something different. Interesting characters and situation. Good ending and everything comes together well. Reads like a young adult novel, which I like. in any case, it doesn't detract from the story.Characters who care about each other.
