About this listen

Never mix fire with magic!

Conn may only be a wizard's apprentice, but even he knows it's dangerous to play with fire, especially around magic. His master, Nevery, warns him that it could all blow up in his face. Besides, they have bigger problems to deal with. There is evil afoot in the city of Wellmet, an evil that isn't human.

But Conn is drawn to the murmurs he hears every time he sets off an explosion, something is trying to talk to him, to warn him. When none of the wizards listen, Conn takes matters into his own hands. His quest to protect everything he loves brings him face-to-face with a powerful sorcerer-king and a treachery beyond even his vivid imagination.

Sarah Prineas works her own spells as she transports us to an extraordinary world where cities are run on living magic and even a thief can become a wizard's apprentice.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Magic Thief: Lost to be better than the print version?

We haven't read the print version but I can say that the narrator has excellent voices for the characters that are so distinctive that it seems like multiple narrators. I usually read allowed to my children but Steinbruner does such a masterful job-- it's way better than what I could have done with it. We love listening to these books and are just about finished with this one and will immediately start the third one.

Who was your favorite character and why?

We love the main character, Conware, and his relationships with Nevery and Rowan. They have depth and real substance. You feel what the main character feels and root for him.

What about Greg Steinbruner’s performance did you like?

His voices! Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful variation and inflection. How he manages to switch into Kern's Scottish accent and back to others is amazing.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

We listen a chapter or two every evening as my kids are settling into bed. Wonderful nighttime story. Each chapter always leaves us wanting to hear more.

excellent story for the 10-12 age group

My mom had me listen to the audio while I read along with the book. I had already read the first book that had me gripped and excited to go to the next book. But again it was a little slow while the characters and story were being built. But at about chapter 7 it started getting good. I finished this book in about a week. I'm starting book 3 tomorrow. I'm so excited. This is my favorite series so far.

I Love this Series

Brilliant

The story is OK and predictable. I am most annoyed by Conn's lack of character development. The 1st book was better. For some reason the narration really breaks the immersion for me.

Just OK, not as good as the 1st book
