About this listen

On the evening of her first masquerade, shy Elizabeth Anne Fitzgerald is stunned by Tyrell de Warenne's whispered suggestion of a midnight rendezvous in the gardens. Lizzie has secretly worshipped the unattainable lord for years. When fortune takes a maddening turn, she is prevented from meeting Tyrell, but she cannot foresee that this night is only the beginning....

Tyrell de Warenne is shocked when, two years later, Lizzie arrives on his doorstep with a child she claims is his. He remembers her well - and knows that he could not possibly be the father. What is this game she is playing... and why? Is Elizabeth Anne Fitzgerald a woman of experience, or the gentle innocent she seems? But neither scandal nor deception can thwart a love too passionate to be denied...

Narrator ruined it

I had previously read this book and wanted to listen to it on a long drive so I bought it. Big mistake. The story itself is a good one though parts of it are cringeworthy and I thoroughly dislike the main character’s sister (there’s a selfish betrayal which is a trope I hate). Excellent writing but the narrator’s attempts at Irish accents and different voices are absurd and take me completely out of the story. It’s painful to listen to.

Overall: buy the paperback not the audible.

Is an Irish accent really this abrasive?

This is my favorite of thousands of books I’ve read in my 65 years. I just read it again, and cried like a baby. But the audio is just horrible. Please redo it! The narrator yells constantly. This is a very mild mannered couple, which makes the book so different and interesting.

Story is great…and then there was that fake Irish accent

We all deserve a refund. That was painful to listen to. It would get tolerable and then the accent.

Wonderful Story, Ridiculous voices

Brenda Joyce is one of the best authors out their, her story's are tremendous. unfortunately the narrator has managed to devalue the story with her horrible interpretation of the male voices and accents. It was so disappointing that her ridiculous variations of male voices undermined and less this WONDERFUL work of literature.

Favorite

This is my favorite book hands-down I have read this book I don’t know how many times. I don’t have time to sit down and read anymore so I’m just grateful I can listen to it on audible anytime I want. The entire De Warrene series is fantastic but I have to say that Lizzie and Tyrell Are my absolute favorites.

Love the story….

Loved the story, but I just couldn’t stand the voices of narrator 😬

Please, we need a different narrator! Can’t stand the voices she does for all the Irish and British characters. She has a beautiful voice when she is doing her own voice but she made the lead character sound ugly and like a goofball he did not sound attractive AT ALL.

Oh! And P.S! I really wished that the sister Ann had SOME kind of karma COMING TO HER!! Like come on!! SOME retribution! she TOTALY screwed her sister over! She KNEW her sister was madly in love with him and she still insisted on sleeping with him!! I feel like she needed some kind of retribution owed to her! Nop she just sleeps with her sisters love of her life, then has a kid and gets to get married with a spotless reputation. AND EVERYONE COVERS FOR HER KEEPING HER SECRET!I think SHE was the true villain in the story! SHE GOT AWAY WITH EVERYTHING!🤬

Wonderful story but horrible narration!

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would not recommend this audible book to anyone
who appreciates a well read story. The narration is
simply horrible and the Irish accents are so fake. I was so excited when I saw that this story was to be
made an audible book. It is a shame because this story is so romantic
well written. Will someone please redo this book with
a new narrator!!!!

What other book might you compare The Masquerade to and why?

"The Prize" which has also horrible narration.

Would you be willing to try another one of Christina Thurmond’s performances?

NO!

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

YES!!

Any additional comments?

Please re-record this book.

LOVE The DeWarenne Series!!

I forgot how much I enjoyed this series. The characters are so well written and have depths. As soon as I saw that there were more of this series on audible I instantly bought them! My only complaint is that the narrator couldn't really do an Irish accent justice so it was a little almost painful in some parts. Could they not have found an ACTUAL Irish narrator?

Horrible narration

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Since this is a story situated in Ireland, I truly think that unless a narrator can guarantee at least a reasonable attempt at an Irish accent, it should be left alone.Grating.

What could Brenda Joyce have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I dont understand the selection of narrators........but such a talented author should have some input.I just couldn't listen to it.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Christina Thurmond?

Someone whose accent wouldn't detract from the story.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I expect that it would have been a good listen......I just couldn't stand it.
