About this listen

A woman burdened by war...A doctor torn between passion and duty...A sweeping tale of love in the face of dishonor from the incomparable storyteller—Kathleen Woodiwiss.

Alaina MacGaren is forced to flee the devastation of her homeland in the guise of a young boy, only to find sanctuary in the arms of an enemy. Cole Latimer is a dashing Yankee surgeon who has served the Union faithfully, and his tender heart compels him to help a ragged, innocent "lad" in need—never suspecting the rags conceal a bewitching belle suspected of being a rebel spy.

But Alaina's masquerade does not fool Cole for long. And the strength, courage, and breathtaking sensuality of this woman whom it would be treasonous to love sets duty and desire at war within him. Yet Destiny has joined them for good or ill—and they both must follow where their hearts would lead them, if they are to build a glorious new life together out of the ashes of the old.

Wonderful walk down nostalgia lane.

I read this book when I was a teenager and it was my absolute favorite historical romance novel. When I saw it was available on audible, I couldn’t wait to revisit some old friends. I was not disappointed- the narration was spot on. The story as fun, romantic, and suspenseful as when it was first released in print.

I have read this book many many times over the years. It is a favorite for sure and this audio version was wonderful .

The accents were great although I wish Cole had had more animation in the time of his voice, it was the one character that always seemed a bit flat .

The forward is unnecessarily condescending…

But the stories remain the same.

I first read these books at far too young a age, but they have ruined me for almost all other romances. I want the long form, sweeping, slow burn romance that these give you. While I understand the books are a “product of their time”, the condescension in the editors forward could definitely be left off. It honest to goodness feels like they absolutely do not want anyone reading these books. After over a year of waiting for the pushed back audiobooks, I’m so glad they’re here!

Ashes in the Wind

I have waited a long time for these books to be released on audible and thankfully the narrator did an amazing job on this book. I love this genre and the author wrote an amazing story, Even though Alaina drove me crazy it was easy to realize she was young and her back and forth was easier to understand,

Ashes in the Wind Revisited

How could I have forgotten the wonderfully written story from long ago! What a pleasure it was to now listen to it and remember the sadness, the laughter, the love and the excited thrill it brought back to me.

Loved It!

Kathleen Woodowis was one of the first romance authors I ever read starting as a teen and raiding my Mother's books! Lol! I have kept and replaced copies of my own over the 40 years hence. I am so happy to see audio has taken them up and this one was my first with her books. It did not disappoint! Nuances I thought I knew were so much more vivid in hearing. Some pronunciations different than I supposed. I credit KW for the majority of my educated vocabulary in reading her stories rendered in historical settings, and other authors like her growing up. Although I was initially put off by the British reader at first, since this story set in the confederate south, she was credible with the southern accents and others. I am from Texas myself and would have stopped listening if it had not been a credible accents and how KW had proscribed with the vocabulary of her characters. I hooted with laughter all the more with "hearing" the antics of Al, and cried once again as Mindy found her words, even knowing what was coming after reading this story 1000 times over. Hearing the story brought it all to life. I hope more re-discover the genius of KW thru audible. She paved the way for all those to come. Nora Roberts a prime example. I ask all take in consideration the time and setting this was written. As those have said, If we do not learn the lessons of history, then we are bound to repeat it. Canceling history and those that erase it only leaves it open for atrocities to happen again. My love of history was introduced by reading KW books and she represents both the bad and good, both sides of the coin AND then unifies both sides. We need more understanding and unity of our differences in today's climate. Audible it was about time!!!!

Very engaging beginning to end

I love how this kept me engaged and eager to read the next page beginning to end. Also helps relate to a time in history where worlds collide north and south US.
