About this listen

On the eve of her wedding in 1978, Shay Garrett peers into the antique mirror in her family's longtime home, the famous Victorian Gingerbread House on Pearl Street in Boulder, Colorado and falls unconscious only to wake in the body of her own grandmother Brandy on the eve of her wedding in 1900. The virginal Brandy, in turn, awakes in Shay's body in 1978 to discover herself pregnant. What follows is a fascinating look at how two women - and their families - cope with this strange and even humorous situation. A classic tale of two women lost in time...

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Probably not. The performance leaves a bit to be desired. Lynda Evans, although she may be a good screen actress, is not a very good narrator.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Brandy Harriet McCabe is my favorite character. I love her sense of morality.

Did Lynda Evans do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Not really. And her inflections, pauses and timing were not always appropriate.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No

Any additional comments?

I've read this book many times and it's one of my favorites.

Great Story

I read the book about six times over the past 30 years and was excited to hear the audio version which I really liked. I did find the narration to be a little odd because I heard swishing noises as she was reading the book also in chapter 34, she mentioned Marc, the boyfriend of Shay when his name throughout the book was Merrit another discrepancy was when Rachel was reading Brandy‘s obituary. She mentioned that Brandy was born August 1980 which makes no sense because Brandy died at the age of 98. I believe she meant to say 1880 was the date of Brandy‘s birth, overall I’m enjoying the narrative because I always love this book. I found the swishing of the pages to be a little distracting. I’ve never heard that in the audio version of a book before.

Narration could use improvement

I read this first when the more modern portions of this book were contemporary, almost 30 years ago. I got to wondering about the story, so found it on Audible. Still as good as I remember, even if "modern" times have become so dated!
Linda Evans (I actually named my daughter Audra, after her character on The Big Valley) was an awesome narrator. She did the characters voices so authentically. It's nice to hear her voice.

Still one of my favorite stories

I've read this book twice in the past. Obviously love the story.

The narrator was awful. Bad accents. Voice inflections were off for the conversations. Mispronounced names a number of times and read a birth year 1980, when it was supposed to be 1890.

I had to try not to "hear" the narrator and just the story.

Love the book, not the narrator.

The story was good & kept me engaged. Unfortunately, the quality of the recording wasn't very good & was a distraction at times. Also, the narrator probably should avoid doing accents in the future. I am familiar with Cornish accents & I didn't even realize that the accent she was doing was supposed to be Cornish. Even so, overall it was worth listening to.

Good Story, Audio ... Not So Much

I remembered reading this book as a teenager 40 years ago. I was so excited to find it listed as being available through Audible. I couldn't remember any details but knew that I loved it all those years ago.

This time around I again enjoyed every minute of this book. The story is engaging, well- thought out and I kept thinking about the characters even when I wasn't listening to it.

The book was great, I really loved the story. This recording however, was terrible. You can actually hear the reader touching and turning pages during the recording; mouth noises and background noises we're enhanced and her voice was never quite loud enough. I could only sit through a few pages of this and had to return it. The book is worth the read though.

Loved the book, not the recording

I will be forever disappointed with the ending unless you tell me there will be a book 2!
