About this listen

A black comedy that follows the misadventures of a reluctant 18th-century hero as he makes his way through the centuries.

A curse has rendered him no more than three inches tall, and when you've been dragged into a six-thousand-year-old faery war, that's not a good size to be.

Humorous Tale with Great Narration

I received this book for free. I voluntarily left this review and all opinions expressed herein are my own.

This book is a humorous tale of a man named Trafalgar Fenn who does not really want to get involved in anything. However, while enjoying an ale at the local pub, he is made an offer to get rid of a wolf which had been plaguing the town. Trafalgar accepts the offer, not knowing that the wolf is associated with a witch. So, when Trafalgar attempts to kill the wolf, the witch curses him to be 3 inches tall. Living in a world at that height has perils of its own but in addition, there is an ongoing war and Trafalgar is going to have to choose sides.

This is a well written tale with many humorous moments and situations which befall Trafalgar as he makes his way. The way this story is written feels more like a fairy tale with Monty Pythonesque humor sprinkled throughout. There are some really good action sequences sprinkled throughout. Mostly, though, I really liked Trafalgar and his constant reluctance to become involved but then, of course, becoming involved.

The narrator, Jennifer Gilmour, was fantastic. She did voices for each of the different characters and monsters; she delivered the jokes/humor with great timing and tone; and she made this story even better.

Feels like it could be a classic

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This was a fun and fairly entertaining fantasy story full of colorful characters. The story was entertaining. It was a pretty straightforward story, nothing too complex, but that isn't a complaint. The narration is well done and really takes your imagination and transports you to the 18th century and has a very faery tale feel to it. Her accents and voices were perfect for the story. All in all, if you are looking for a classic-feeling faery tale, this would be a good choice.

Entertaining Comedic Fantasy

When the label on the box says 'black comedy' you sometimes wonder how black the comedy will be. Then the story answers by having people die in tragic ways but framing them humorously and you realize you're in for a trip. This story manages to take the tale of a pretty iffy individual (not a true antihero, but definitely in it for himself), shrink him down to 3 inches, and pull a half Gulliver's travels, fantasy epic with a bunch of deaths and some solid comic relief. If that sounds up your alley, which it was up mine, then this is the story for you.

The narration aids that fact as well with the narrator adding the extra level of emotion that makes the black comedy work, and doesn't lose it during periods of fantastic combat. It is definitely a pleasant listen and I'd recommend anyone interested in comedy and fantasy give it a look.

Moves a little slow

Narration is really good, but unfortunately the story move very slowly at times.
