About this listen

Is love worth taking a risk when nothing is certain?

Tess Monroe is starting a new chapter in her life - or, at least, she hopes she is. After quitting her tedious, dead-end job, Tess has some time on her hands before her new career starts, and she's determined to make the most of it.

As a congratulations gift from her family, Tess receives a week's retreat: a guided hike up to an exclusive yoga resort in the mountains. She's certain this will be her chance for a fresh start, but the trip begins on a bad note when an unexpected storm turns the leisurely hike into a dangerous ordeal. When Tess slips off the steep, icy trail, her vacation and her life are in jeopardy...until she falls straight into the strong, capable arms of the world's hottest park ranger: Remy Labelle.

Remy is a bold, intelligent woman with a cutting wit, and her striking features and smoldering smirk make Tess go weak in the knees. But Remy has a huge chip on her shoulder about the yoga resort, and Tess never takes chances when it comes to romance. Still, Tess can't deny the incendiary spark between them, and she finds herself questioning her rigid expectations of what a perfect romance must be.

As things keep going wrong on Tess's vacation, she and Remy grow closer and passions flare. But Remy's past - and the manipulations of Melissa, the resort's manager, who clearly has a hold over Remy - threatens to get in the way. Will Tess overcome her fear of heartbreak to try a relationship with Remy? And even if she does, can Remy drop her barriers and allow herself to love again?

Very entertaining lighthearted story; likable MCs

Any additional comments?

“The Mountain Between Us” intrigued me because of the many similarities with Bridget Essex’s “A Wolf for Valentine’s Day”.

No, there’s no werewolf here, but there is

• A woman disillusioned with where she is at this point in life; she doesn’t like who she’s become
• A mysterious and gorgeous superfit woman
• A secluded yoga retreat high up a mountain
• Bad weather

What there also is, that was missing from “A Wolf”, is a real sense of joy listening to the very likable MCs Tess and Remy banter and flirt as they get to know each other while being brought together frequently by unexpected circumstances, and while being kept apart by a jealous ex.

The secondary characters in “The Mountain Between Us” are terrific too. We have Tess’ friend Emily, resort maintenance man Glenn and his dog, desk clerk Marty, and a gaggle of hilarious new-age yoga enthusiasts.

The interactions between Tess and Remy are super cute, despite Remy frequently infuriating Tess with mixed signals. Tess is particularly delightful. Despite not liking who’s she’s allowed herself to become, she radiates optimism and excitement for the future as she seeks to once again be like “college Tess”, who she remembers as being brave, took chances and had a fire for life. Well, that certainly describes our Tess on the mountain well!

This is a very fun book, but one of the funniest sections was probably unintentional. Suddenly, during a snowstorm emergency, one tank of gas from a lawnmower is obtained and hot showers are suddenly plentiful, the resort pool is heated and the hot tub is soon working! Was that magic gasoline? 🙄

I was, as I said earlier, intrigued by “The Mountain Between Us”, but I was also unsure whether I wanted to try it. The only other book I’ve listened to by Snowe (“Heart of Glass”) was disappointing, as was the Essex book that has so many similar elements. Also, this is my first time listening to this narrator. Well, with books as with people, sometimes one just has to take a chance…and I’m really glad I did!

The characters, story and witty banter (I love witty banter!) was terrific, and Lillis turns out to be a wonderful narrator. 4.25* for the book, with an extra ½* for the narration, rounded up to 5* - highly recommended; I’ll re-listen to “The Mountain Between Us” myself when I want a cheerful book that will make me smile.

Stop falling down mountains

It was alright. Sweet romance but felt a bit contrived and I found the dialog grating. Didn't feel as polished as other stories.
