The New York Times best seller, updated and expanded, featuring 15 explosive new chapters.

The previous edition of this now-classic book revealed the existence and subversive manipulations of "economic hit men". John Perkins wrote that economic hit men (EHM) "are highly paid professionals who cheat countries around the globe out of trillions of dollars. Their tools include fraudulent financial reports, rigged elections, payoffs, extortion, sex, and murder". In Perkins' case, the tool was debt - convincing strategically important countries to borrow huge amounts of money for enormous "development" projects that served the very rich while driving the country deeper into poverty and debt. And once indebted, these countries could be controlled.

In this latest edition, Perkins provides revealing new details about how he and others did their work. But, more importantly, in an explosive new section, he describes how the EHM tools are being used around the world more widely than ever - even in the United States. The cancer has metastasized, yet most people still aren't aware of it.

Fear and debt drive the EHM system. We are hammered with messages that terrify us into believing that we must pay any price, assume any debt, to stop the enemies who, we are told, lurk at our doorsteps. The EHM system - employing false economics, bribes, surveillance, deception, debt, coups, assassinations, and unbridled military power - has become the dominant system of economics, government, and society today. It has created what Perkins calls a "death economy". But Perkins offers hope: He concludes with dozens of specific, concrete suggestions for actions all of us can take to wrest control of our world away from the economic hit men and help give birth to a life economy.

I appreciate what the author has done in exposing his former life and the corruption that he was part of. I would have liked a little more information about why the author felt like he could finally write this book and not have his life be in danger. Maybe I just missed that but I don't remember a very clear explanation of that.

Eye opening

As our world is flung into chaos and self-destruction, this is a MUST read for all who have any stake, direct or indirect, in the future. John Perkins reveals the mechanisms - economic & political (including military) - that are employed to force domination of the entire globe by the "corporatocracy." For many of us who have been investigating and reporting on these matters for decades, this book puts the pieces of the puzzle together - connecting the dots. Yet it goes further, delving into the personal and social psychology of these activities and dynamics - including an unflinching- honest, & self-critical - exploration and confession of his own role. With compasson, Perkins gives us the tools - both awareness of the problem and actions to confront it. Essential reading.

I enjoyed hearing about his career as an EHM. It proves an interesting vack story to regime changes in the past and the fallout. But the author is a raging liberal. So much so that it really took away from the story. and as someone with economic training, he should know better. I had to stop listening before it was over because his logic errors were too annoying.

Interesting Career but a raging liberal

I have little patience for people who earn a fortune and live a luxurious life, then complain about all the pain and suffering they’ve caused. I hope his guilt haunts him until his death, which should be slow and painful. After all, isn’t that what he thinks he deserves?
It’s not that I believe everything in this book either. Not ever world event is connected to EHM’s as he calls them. Geopolitics is a game as old as man, and nations, so economic policy is only one way that cat is skinned. Either way, the self righteous tone is insulting considering that he has most of his epiphanies while enjoying some luxurious setting that his fortune provides him.

I’m not impressed
