Publisher's summary

The Girl Before meets The Couple Next Door in an utterly satisfying Hitchcockian story about a couple who moves into their dream neighborhood only to discover nothing is as it seems....

The perfect couple. The perfect house. The perfect crime.

Londoners Jack and Syd found their dream home: lots of space, a great location, and a friendly owner who wanted a young couple to have it.

Everything is exactly what they hoped for when they move in - except Jack makes a disturbing discovery in the attic, and Syd begins to wonder about the girl next door. And they each keep the other in the dark.

A mistake.

Because someone has just been killed outside their back door, and now, the police are watching them.

This is their chance to prove they're innocent - or to get away with murder.

Whose story do you believe?

Critic reviews

“An intricate, powerful, and deeply unsettling thriller about the profound ways in which cruelty can change its survivors, and the creeping fear that nothing - not your home, not love, not even your own mind - is as rock-solid and impregnable as we all want to believe.” (Tana French, New York Times best-selling author of The Trespasser)

“This terrifying thriller sent shivers through me!” (Jane Corry, author of My Husband's Wife)

“A raw, tightly wound thrill ride, a nightmare scenario about a home purchase that goes horribly wrong. And then some. This is a fast-paced, intense, and creepy novel that you won't be able to put down until you reach the end.” (David Bell, best-selling author of Bring Her Home)

Loved!

Thoroughly enjoyed this book and couldn't stop listening. There was odd and unexpected behavior by some characters, but as story unfolds, behavior becomes more understandable. Narrators superb!

double story line adds intrigue

it's a fun read with an interesting story line. A murder plot unfolds by way of 2 points of view.

I enjoyed it.

Really good thriller that held my interest and loved how it came together in the end. I thought it was a bit confusing at times early on the way it was told, but worth hanging in.

This book may not be for everyone

Listen intently: One can miss important issues. I did. Following the purchase of a new house, Londoners Syd and Jack are distraught by strange and curious disturbances. Author Simon Lelic presents the twisted, creepy and often confusing viewpoints of the couple. What is true? What are lies? Conspiracy? Unsettling and intriguing, Lelic reveals that secrets and revenge can be devastating. Past memories of Syd’s traumatic family life and childhood are brought to light. The chapters go from Syd to Jack (a favored style of mine). Narrators Gemma Whelan and Simon Newington are perfectly paired. There is a jaw-dropping and surprising ending I never saw coming.

2

I'm being harsh with that 2 rating, but this might as well have been written with crayon so
heavy handed is the plot and the writing. By the end of the mystery I cheered on the police hoping you-know-who would go to prison for life sparing us anymore stories. Pass on by

Wish I had not

This was not for me. The emotional, mental, and physical pain the main characters endures is graphic. Absolutely awful.
