Very Good, Worth The Credit

I would say that this is a well written story with very thoroughly developed characters and definitely worth your time and credit.
IMO this is not Vanessa Savage’s best, I think “The Woods” and “The Woman In The Dark” were both much creepier and just more enjoyable, more entertaining all the way around.
But this was still fun and the narration is exceptional.
I would absolutely recommend it.
But if this is your first experience of Vanessa Savage, I would start with one of the aforementioned titles instead, as they are a much better representation of this author at her best.
Still, this is a great story, it’s unique and clever and has many layers and many interesting characters. Also the setting is wonderful and the dual timeline works well here.
Full of atmosphere and mystery so you can’t really go wrong…

Incomprehensible Characters

This story had all the pieces, but something was missing from the execution. The characters didn’t make sense to me. I didn’t understand why they all reacted so dramatically to simple mistakes.

SPOILERS

The father especially confuses me. He was such a mean spirited father in day-to-day interactions with his family. But then his huge transgression, the big reveal in the end, didn’t add up either. You’d think he framed Jacob for murder or killed him himself, the way everyone reacted. Dad was set up to be this awfully cold & cruel figure, but his downfall was reporting Jacob and kicking his daughter out? It just seemed anticlimactic.
