About this listen

After his last run-in with the fairies, Artemis Fowl had his mind wiped of his memories of the world below ground. Any goodness he had grudgingly learned is now gone, and the young genius has reverted to his criminal lifestyle.

Artemis is in Berlin preparing to steal a famously well-guarded painting from a German bank. Little does he know that his every move is being watched by his cunning old rival, Opal Koboi. The evil pixie has spent the last year in a self-induced coma, plotting her revenge on all those who foiled her attempt to destroy the LEPrecon fairy police. And Artemis is at the top of her list. In a brilliant move, Opal escapes by cloning herself and masquerading as a human in order to carry out her schemes. Her first act is to lure Captain Holly Short and Commander Root into a deadly trap. Her next step is to destroy Artemis by turning his own genius against him.

Once again, it's up to Artemis Fowl to stop the human and fairy worlds from colliding. Only this time, Artemis faces an enemy who may have finally outsmarted him.

Still addictive

Wonderful story, fantastic performance, and I even played some of it for my 6th grade earth science test during a review about earth’s layers and tectonic plates. The characters are loveable, and are continuing to be developed throughout the series. My favorite scene was Artemis as an annoying teenager. I also appreciate that Butler and Mulch received more dialogue this time.

I gave it a 4 because the story ended rather quickly and it felt like it could have been concluded better.

Enter a wonderful villan

I love all the Harry Potter books, but this one really establishes Opal as a world class villan. She causes no end of trouble in this one, with groups of characters trying to get in one place and stop the she devil. Seeing as the main character is a genius, kids (and grownups) can actually learn some science content without it feeling like another boring lesson.

Nat Parker is AMAZING!

This narrator is the absolute best! He even does different accents, all of which are flawless!

Weak

Compared to the series so far, this is a weak addition. Second weakest book in the series. The weakest is yet to come.

Another hit

Would you consider the audio edition of The Opal Deception to be better than the print version?

Since I listen to unabridged versions, I consider it the same - but the character voices are provided for me.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Opal Deception?

Holly and the Captain in the cave.

What about Nathaniel Parker’s performance did you like?

He does a nice job with all the character voices and portraying their feelings.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Holly's lose of her mentor.
