About this listen

A body has been found on the overlook near Mulholland Drive. The victim, identified as Dr. Stanley Kent, has two bullet holes in the back of his head, from what looks like an execution-style shooting. LAPD detective Harry Bosch is called out to investigate.

As soon as Bosch begins retracing Dr. Kent's steps, contradictions emerge. While Kent doesn't seem to have had ties to organized crime, he did have access to dangerous radioactive substances from just about every hospital in Los Angeles County. What begins as a routine homicide investigation opens up before Bosch into something much larger, more dangerous - and much more urgent.

Good thriller

I hesitate to read books from the Hari Bosch series because some of them involve crimes that are quite gruesome. But this was a thrilling read which I enjoyed and it has more to do with chasing leads and criminals and less about forensics and gruesome crime scenes

The great Harry Bosch series Book 13

In the modern detective genre Michael Connelly is among my favorite authors. All 20 novels in the series are in my Audible library and I've listened to most more than once. The Overlook is a wonderful novel with excellent narration.

terrible music detracts from listening

as always I love Bosch and the narrator. but the added music is grating at best and just plain awful and distracting at worst. sometimes the music is so loud that you can't hear the story

A bit short

A relatively short Bosch book by Michael Connelly’s standards. While if may be short on content it has all the elements of a Bosch thriller. There is the continuing distrust between the LA PD and the FBI. The love hate relationship between the two agencies goes on as does Bosch’s relationship with a certain FBI agent. Bosch goes to the chief of police for some help dealing with the feds but both the chief and Bosch are locked out of the information the feds have. Bosch, true to his belief, finding the missing link will lead to solving the crime proves his belief right once again. The narration is very good. I have repeatedly found some short comings with the actual recording. Not with the narration but missing or difficult to understand parts of the book. I have noticed this with the last several books. Does anyone else find this happening?

Gripping

I ordered this in spite of all the bad reviews and am not sure what the fuss was. It is short, yes, but seemed longer and not in a bad way. I found it hard to pause.
The ending also didn’t seem clipped to me. A few loose ends, but all cases have some. I’m not sure if people wanted an eight page mea culpa from the killer or what, but I found more than enough detail.

Okay, I normally try not to respond to other reviews, but had to get that off my chest.

Very well-crafted study in misdirection and how even the best trained people can believe what they want to believe. I feel that’s part of what makes Connelly so successful is that is doesn’t always stick to a formula. Authors that do quickly become boring imo.
I do wish sometimes that Bosch would grow more as a person over the course of these books, but I suppose that’s part of what makes him Bosch.

Len Cariou is a solid narrator.

Wow!

So interesting! This book was unusual to me in that I was really pissed off at Bosch in his bullheadedness. I soon loved him again though… I can’t say more, because I don’t want to give anything away. But the story seemed so realistic! And then the outcomes were so very unsuspected!! Turns out this is one of my favorites in the Bosch universe.

The Overlook

Harry Bosch never disappoints when it comes to hard nose detective work. He does things his way no matter what. He is technologically challenged but he still is able to solve the crime using his methods. This read went a little fast so there was not the usual time to savor the writing and plot but I still give it 4 stars.

The best of Connelly

I've heard many of the Connelly selections available and this book stands with the best of them. Though shorter than some of his other books, it's well worth the listen. Connelly's narrator is always outstanding!

Short half-life

A misdirection from his usual involved and developed plot and story line. Bosch is getting slow...
Enjoyable, nevertheless.
The narration, as always, is good.
