About this listen

As soon as the government passed legislation allowing humans to be genetically engineered and sold as pets, the rich and powerful rushed to own beautiful girls like Ella. Trained from birth to be graceful, demure, and perfect, these "family companions" enter their masters' homes prepared to live lives of idle luxury.

Ella is happy with her new role as playmate for a congressman's bubbly young daughter, but she doesn't expect Penn, the congressman's handsome and rebellious son. He's the only person who sees beyond the perfect exterior to the girl within. Falling for him goes against every rule she knows, and the freedom she finds with him is intoxicating.

But when Ella is kidnapped and thrust into the dark underworld lurking beneath her pampered life, she's faced with an unthinkable choice. Because the only thing more dangerous than staying with Penn's family is leaving...and if she's unsuccessful, she'll face a fate far worse than death.

Ending could've been better but interesting enough. Kind of short, could have been more detailed and fun to have a sequel.

First, the idea for Perfected is striking in it's originality, if nothing short of revolting in it's nature and origins. People as pets? How can you not be intrigued? How can you not be disgusted? How can you not read it?

Layered with nuanced lessons about different types of freedom, Perfected will leave the thinking person feeling both grateful and wary.

My Reading Speed: 1.5x

Have I Read The Book Before Listening to the Audio? Yes, years ago

Overall Audio Impression:

When I read this book years ago, I’m guessing that I got caught up in other books or the books weren’t all out yet and that’s why I never finished the series. It seems like a book series I would have enjoyed reading at the time that I’d read it.

As for this read through, I enjoyed it again, though I was a bit uncomfortable with people keeping other people as pets. The storyline is interesting, and I’m wondering how much of the things Ella sees/discovers will carry on into the other two books. And though there is romance, I wasn’t 100% into the match or the build up. I think a teen would, but as an adult I wasn’t here for it.

I did love the narrator though! Tavia Gilbert did amazing voices, making each one distinct from the others. I loved that the guys and girls even sounded close to the types of voices you’d expect them to have despite it all being one person.

Favorite Scenes:

Making a friend

Finding a kindred spirit

Meeting another pet

End scene

Reader’s Notes:

-this is the first in a trilogy & must be read in order

-this is told from Ella’s point of view

-Ella is a biologically engineered human & in this world people who are engineered are considered/treated like/called pets and meant to do what their masters/owners desired

-there is some suggestive comments

-there are some unwanted touches (mainly on the face area or arms)

-there is about 5 curse/not nice words

-Ella swims in her underwear with a guy (for a swimming lesson)

-it is mentioned that a character (pet) was sent back for being pregnant & insinuated that an owner or staff had been involved to get her pregnant

This story is wonderful. Even though it is written simplistically and the romance involved is cheesy, I think it really captured the feelings and thoughts of the naïve, innocent main character. The story left me wanting more and left me thinking deeply, which I didn't really expect. I recommend it for sure.

Loved this story

This was a fun book. It had an interesting premise. I felt there was a lot more that could have been done with it, however. The narrator was great, but couldn't breathe much life into Penn, who just wasn't that exciting a romantic interest. I enjoyed the concept enough that I don't regret the purchase.

Goodish

The whole story is pretty good and the whole book makes you want to continue going and not stop listening to it. And then the ending is just well wow but if you don’t go through the whole book and skip to the ending, you won’t care too much about the characters until the ending.

The Ending is just wow.

Simple is the beast word I have for it. That's not necessarily a bad thing. It made a good bed time read (listen). The reader had good tone and voiced different characters well. The story was good and held my attention but is not a masterpiece or thinking man's novel. There are no in depth explanations on the science or politics in this world that tells how it was seen as okay for people to own "pets(people)". it's just the story of one written for a younger audience.

Perfectly Simple

People say a good story leaves you wanting more and in this case I wanted to see the development of the Pet learn to read and write but even more, I'd like this to have been a non 11-13 book, without being graphic though, I'd like to learn more of other pets lives. Only seeing two pets left some to my imagination but i needed more story. Indeed a sequel after Niagara
i also would have liked to know more of how they/she was born and how they were treated before she was purchased. definitely more prefacing or at least flashbacks other than the same red door felt like the writer wrote a lot but then some crazy editor just bulldozed chunks of paragraphs, deleting what i would like to have read.

I wanted more.
