About this listen

In the future, the mind is everything....

Hundreds of years into the future, a new species of human has emerged. People with super strength, or speed, or sight, or smell. People known as the Enhanced. After wars have decimated the earth's population, the survivors live in relative safety in the city of Haven. Separated into two parts - Inner and Outer Haven - the city is the final refuge for both the Enhanced and the regular "Unenhanced".

Eighteen-year-old Brie Melrose is just a normal girl living in Outer Haven with the rest of her kind. Growing up in an orphanage, Brie never knew her parents, and her life was always destined to be simple. One day, however, a routine job turns into something much more, and Brie finds herself under the watchful eye of the Savants, the highest order of the Enhanced, blessed with supreme intellect and who consider emotions to be pointless.

Soon, as threats she never even knew existed begin to close in, Brie learns that her world, and the city of Haven, isn't quite what she thought it was. And neither is she....

Good book to start a series

The only thing wrong is Audible doesn’t have the whole series on it yet. Hopefully the rest come out so people like me can by the rest

Poor character modeling

Whether in the abstract or the on the cover, the behavior of the main character and the words meant to build and describe her conflict. I found the story digressing while using offensively disrespectful language. It seems the main character is persistently kept ignorant through the more interesting, early part of the story, but then the reveal is unimpressive and left me disenchanted. I couldn't finish the book after that and hope I will be able to return it.

Great story

This is a great series and I enjoyed it very much. The narration for Books 1 thru 4 wasn’t that great. They use a single voice for all characters and they don’t do the books any justice. Sadly only books 1 thru 4 are available on audio and I was very disappointed that the rest of the series was still not available a year later.

wow!

I loved the first 4 books in this series and am so sad the rest aren't in audio. With my life I need audio and this is one of the best series I've read/listened to in months. The narrator is awesome too. I want the rest!

The book is wonderful

I loved the books so I bought the audio. I could not finish it. The narrator did not have a different voice for each of the characters. Her voice was dry as she read the book. I love audio books for the enjoyment of listing to the voices of the characters come alive.

Too slow, not enough grit.

There are a lot of places in this book that you see as places for improvement. First among them is the Plot. Big bad gov't makes a law that goes against the morality of the vast loyal subjects and turns innocent people into criminals. This law also stops one kind of enhanced from 'breeding' with other kinds of enhanced, and made 'having emotions' illegal. (Massive EYE ROLL TO THE HEAVENS) SMGDH 'Oh come on' really. Its illegal to love who you love and have emotions. SMH. Ohh, and by the way, the name 'CROMWELL' comes up. SMH So you know you are dealing with a zealot. SMH.

Basically, if you remove these two laws, this story has nowhere to go. And honestly, without it, you don't need to read/listen 8 books that could be solved if you remove Cromwell and these two laws.

That brings me to the PACE of the story. It is very slow. It takes nearly all of book one before the MC Bree realizes what she is. Its 7hours on audible and you don't really get things started till the listener is 5hr and 30mins in. SMH. Very very very slow. Clearly the author is milking it, but the plot doesn't deserve this level of attention and detail. #Justsaying.
