About this listen

The is the exciting - yet little known - story of the making of England in the ninth and 10th centuries, the years in which King Alfred the Great, his son and grandson defeated the Danish Vikings who had invaded and occupied three of England's four kingdoms.

At the end of The Last Kingdom, The Danes had been defeated at Cynuit, but the triumph of the English is not fated to last long. The Danish Vikings quickly invade and occupy three of England's four kingdoms - and all that remains of the once proud country is a small piece of marshland, where Alfred and his family live with a few soldiers and retainers, including Uhtred, the dispossessed English nobleman who was raised by Danes. Uhtred has always been a Dane at heart, and has always believed that given the chance, he would fight for the men who raised him and taught him the Viking ways. But when Iseult, a powerful sorceress, enters Uhtred's life, he is forced to consider feelings he's never confronted before - and Uhtred discovers, in his moment of greatest peril, a newfound loyalty and love for his native country and ruler.

Again, this narrator brings the story to life in a way that makes it hard to "put this book down!"

Excel ten story, top notch narration!

It got a bit repetitive, battle and rebellion over and over again. I would like more relationship development and less battles.

good, not great

Just keeps you listening. Wonderful narration and enjoyable story. Second book moved a little better than the first, which was good enough to make me follow the story. I will pick up the next in the series.

Enjoyable listen

Great sequel to The Last Kingdom. I was hanging on every word and the narrator was again fantastic. Was very sad to see they changed the narrator in book 3.

Love this narrator! Perfect for the story

wonderful book, and Johnathon Keeble absolutely crushes the story telling, unique, burley, resonating voices and inflections! Benard Cornwell takes you away to am ancient England of brutality, cunning, and survival... I couldn't speak more highly!

Strong Book 2 with good character and plot development. Bringing back the Saxons from the brink of annihilation in the swamp was a great story. Great narration!

My only personal complaints regarding the story:
The author’s disdain towards Christianity through Uhtred is a constant theme, and Uhtred’s part in the ending wasn’t as climatic as my high expectations anticipated. Kind of a downer ending among the victory with major character deaths, but realistic. No major cliffhangers to drive you to the next book.

Strong Book 2, Great Narration
