About this listen

The invaders came down to Earth in their ships and multi-legged battle armor, and we had no way to stop them from taking the water. Made sense. They looked like massive crabs, after all. The war was over in days. Now, those left behind eke out a parched existence in the scorched rubble, avoiding the hunter-killer teams of crabs as they scour Earth for whatever they deem valuable.

Sixteen-year-old Yasmine Whitten is an expert at navigating the wastes; born into this world, she not only survives; she thrives. But she's got a secret: her mother's old cell phone.

Kept intact for 13 years of alien invasion and kept charged by a tiny solar panel, these two relics of a dead world give her sanity and a host of tools that allow her to stay ahead of the scavengers, both human and crab alike. It's a flashlight and a camera, and when she can't sleep, she can comfort herself in the cold desert by looking at pictures of her mother and father and by reading their old text messages to one another. She's doing well enough, for a teenager on her own in a ravaged world. Until the phone rings.

The Phone is author W.J. Orion's first young-adult science-fiction novel. First in a planned trilogy of Dry Earth titles, it's suitable for teenagers and adults alike.

teenage wonder

I found this series because I love this Author, going into this story your not quit sure what to except if you've read his other books. But jumping down this rabbit hole was a great adventure, the lite sense of humor and the attitude follows a teenage girl pretty well made me feel like it was my daughter talking.
on to the next book to see where the adventure goes..

Don't Let the Synopsis Throw You Off- It's Good

Someone asked me what I was reading, and I said "The Phone"..."What's it about?", they asked...I froze because I was honestly too embarrassed as a grown-ass woman to say "Well, alien crabs and alien shrimp...". But I got over myself, had an internal laugh, and said "Okay, hear me out, I know this sounds stupid but its actually a really good book..."

So, this review is to say...if you are considering this book but aren't sure about the synopsis...I assure you, it's worth it.

It has solid character development- this authors strong suit. I often find myself rooting for the strangest characters due to the world he paints. It's predictable in that YA way but somehow still builds tension and makes you excited. I dug it. Additionally, the male author does a nice job of capturing a female perspective - a rarity in the sci-fi & YA genres. If you follow this author, his growth in writing female characters is really exciting to experience.

Different kind of alien story

This is the first book I’ve read/listened to by this author and I would listen to more if this becomes a series.

Yasmine has grown up in a world mostly devoid of water since the aliens invaded, took it and killed most of the earths population. On her own since her parents died, Yasmine scavenges for things the people in a nearby village need. She is welcome among them, but chooses to live outside the walls, away from everyone, avoiding becoming too emotionally close. Her mother’s phone is her comfort and survival aid. One day it rings and she gets swept up in her concern for the person who contacted her. With her “don’t back down” attitude she ventures off. It won’t be easy though, no only are there the crabs, but there’s people out there she’s been warned to avoid.

This is the second book I’ve listened to by this narrator ( Bailey Carr ) and I would listen to another. She has distinct voices for each character. Her style moved the book along well and got me involved in the story. She puts emotion into the words.

There are no explicit sex scenes, or excessive violence. Another reviewer mentioned the occasional swearing, but it must be minimal- I don’t remember any. This is a great story for teens and adults.
