Publisher's summary

A modern guidebook based on ancient Buddhist techniques for transforming emotional pain, anxiety, and stress into complete mental well-being that benefits us and the people around us.

We’ve all heard platitudes about cultivating love and compassion, but how can we really develop these qualities in ourselves and—crucially—share them in our world? The Power of Mind provides a proven path.

Khentrul Rinpoche teaches that regardless of what’s unfolding in our lives, our route to freedom lies in our minds—and how we work with them. A thousand years ago, the Indian saint Atisha endured great hardship to bring the Buddha’s teachings to Tibet, where they flourished. This book introduces a primary text that emerged—the Seven Key Points of Mind Training.

Khentrul Rinpoche learned these practices from teachers who faced innumerable hardships during the Cultural Revolution. Rinpoche was moved by the ability of these teachers who, like alchemists, were able to follow these techniques to transform their suffering into something good.

The Power of Mind shares instructions that we can work through, one by one—from recognizing the preciousness and impermanence of our lives to avoiding drama and self-centeredness—along with meditations and practices. This wisdom is accessible to anyone seeking inner transformation—whether Buddhist or not. As Khentrul Rinpoche states, “Peace and happiness can be attained, but not by searching for something in the outside world. They start within us then extend out to the entire globe.”

Learning to Find Joy in the Face of Suffering

How do we find joy in the face of suffering? We live in a time of intense complexity and challenge. The external world increasingly reflects the suffering within our own minds. This book provides authentic, tangible, and practical tools to rapidly expand our capacity to respond effectively to whatever arises throughout our day - be it happiness or pain - in a manner that fosters long-term personal development and positive change. Our greatest impact in the world stems from our ability to see the larger picture and develop our personal wisdom and compassion. With so many "paths to change" in the world, it can be hard to know what to do- what actually reduces suffering? It is a precious jewel to find a book that is based in long standing, concrete, and tested techniques. I found the book to be accessible to anyone- regardless of race, religion, class, or gender. This approach can be implemented in a simple manner that works with any lifestyle. The ability to change, evolve, and re-wire our brains is a unique human gift. I am so grateful for this manual on how to do so.

Very enjoyable

I found this work very enjoyable especially after having just re-read Awakening Dignity by Phachok Rinpoche, this book was a great supplement and more indepth follow-up. The narrator gets a little boring but at least understands how to pronounce almost all of the words correctly which is unusual in the genre.

Not a one and done book

The teachings in this book resonate with the basic common sense we possess and offer a profound way to apply it to every day life , as a way to suffer less and create more love and compassion foer one's self, for others , and the whole world. Too much to digest in one sitting. Will be reviewing the material again and again and in meditation.
