Publisher's summary

Deborah Woodly agreed to a pretend engagement with Reeve, Earl of Cambridge, because his straitlaced uncle wouldn’t let him touch his inheritance before his 26th birthday. Not unless he contracted a marriage, which would presumably “settle” him.

Deb and Reeve promised not to fall in love, or marry, but to ultimately declare they wouldn’t suit. Broken promises, but also someone was trying to kill Deb.

The duo of Joan Wolf author and Karen Cass narrator is outstanding.

Joan Wolf’s books are all consistently excellent and the Pretenders is a favorite. The narrative from Deborah’s point of view is brilliant and even better is the personality that Joan Wolf creates for her. The view of Reeve through her eyes as a friend then love and finally lover is fascinating and a WELCOME BREAK from the often tedious trope of the overbearing male and weak willed or insecure female whose brain is wiped clean by lust in the first 20 pages of the story. The narrator is outstanding. Her male voices are believable and nuanced. Her female voices are rich and varied and communicate not only plot but emotion and character. I highly recommend all Joan wolf’s books on audible and look forward to more being added - hopefully all narrated by Karen Cass.

No pretending...

This is an enjoyable book! I enjoyed Karen Cass narration of this intriguing tale. I often found something in the first person storytelling to be uncomfortable yet she pulled it off beautifully.

It’s a steamy tale, eventually.
It cost less than a credit and worth each cent.

More realism than usual

Deb's mother was ill treated in more ways than one. Robert is spoiled. Psychological trauma all around. You know, normal people. kudos to the narrator, however the cadence seemed off sometimes. one sentence was fast and the next was slow. That said, I liked it anyway.

Dreadful

I’ve rarely read a book in which there were NO likable characters!
I loathed every last one! The protagonists were spoiled, greedy and manipulative. Whiny, entitled immature little jerks.
I think the reader is supposed to sympathize. I could not.

Sweet

A sweet story. The narrator was good, but the story was long and boring for me.
